As a east coaster (familiar with cities of the US), in my opinion, LA has the most potential out of any city in the US right now. So many exciting things happening from an urbanization standpt.

How is street life progressing in DT LA? That seemed to be one of the major hurdles from my trips to DT LA in the past...how is the new development affecting street life?

Thank you for your view of our fair city. As of right now, much of the new construction has yet to open. Street life is and has been alive on Spring st and 7th st in the core, with pockets in the arts district. We are on the precipice of many new projects opening by the beginning of next year. 8th street is on the verge as well as Figueroa.

I found the parking garage the units will replace. It is about the same size as the base of Atelier yet this project has nearly three times as many units. So either these are super tiny units, or this project is going to be tall, very tall.

^I do know that the owner wanted to replace the garage not the mall. Even if they did though wouldn't we still be looking at like 20-30 floors?

Agreed. I'd say that overall pedestrian activity is up pretty much every year, but the "boom" really starts this year and next as projects open.

By 2040, DTLA is projected to add an extra 125,000 residents, 70,000 units, and 55,000 jobs to whatever the numbers are now. (60,000 residents today; 28,000 residents in year 2000).

^ Based on blackcat's article, it appears that the mall itself - which has a pretty large footprint - would be part of the development. So this wouldn't have to be that tall. Think 8th and Grand, but likely with a couple of sections that potentially break the 8-story plane. That being said, though, with 100,000 sq. ft. of retail on the first and second stories, it's almost guaranteed that some portion of this development will have to go higher than 7 or 8 stories to reach 994 units. Personally, I really like the inclusion of 160 affordable units. That really helps.

^The lot is a similar scale to the College Station Development (even smaller actually), yet it will have nearly two times as many units as the original plan (the one with the two 20 story towers). So this will be massive.

they were filed too recently to have moved through the process quick enough to break ground by the end of the year. In a city where NIMBYs didn't have so much control in the planning process, they would.

I think Fig/Pico will probably get fast tracked because its city land but who knows.

If you mean the Wedbush Building, it wasn't designed by Jahn.

Great shots, Hunter! I personally don't mind the translucent qualities of the crown. I do like what Metropolis is doing for the density of the skyline from the west, though. It really is extending and connecting the skyline all the way down to 9th Street.
