Well now it just goes to show you that beauty (or ugliness) is in the eye of the beholder. It brings to mind of when AMC introduced the Pacer, people loved it thinking that it was a really cool car--a true beauty. Not I.

PS just in case you forgot or never knew what it looked like:https://www.google.com/#q=photos+of+amc+pacer

^ The previous proposal for that site (this must've been the late 00s) called for a 62-story tower (if my memory is correct). That's quite a downsize.

Wow, there are plenty more projects to be critical of IMO. The one thing I prefer about these 7 story structures is that they are much better connected to the street level than all the towers going up with their bulky eyesore parking podiums. I don't mind this project at all.

I don't mind it either. As 7 story buildings go, this is far from the worse one.

That's part of it. but it's also how something that's being dealt with needs to be placed in its proper...or full...context.

I don't really care for the design of the new apt bldg at olympic & olive....I believe it will even have silly looking outdoor draperies hanging on its upper deck. But when placed against all the parts of dtla that still have to be filled in, cleaned up, or torn down & replaced with something halfway decent, spending a lot of time criticizing the design of new devlpt does make me think of the humorous tag line of...

but that's due to new devlpt in dtla having to be set against the backdrop of much of the hood still looking like this....

Video Link

instead of this....

It's actually shocking when you compare dtla with the way it should have always been, well before today....based on the shape & condition of other cities compared with LA.

Many ppl are going to notice things like that....fully aware of the differences if they're well traveled, or world travelers.....more than they'll notice the architectural quality.....or lack of such....of even GH palmer's tuscan wonders or bldgs like Olympic & olive.

DTLA Hotel Development

With the ongoing shortage of downtown hotel rooms for conventions being eased with the opening of several larger hotels this year, it's time to revisit downtown's hotel development.

2017 will see at least 1,450 new rooms in three hotels, with possibly another 250 if the NoMad opens before year-end. Although opening dates are often a moving target, as of today the Freehand and Indigo are taking reservations starting in mid-April, and the Wilshire Grand InterContinental as of July 2.

2018 should see the completion of the Proper, Park Hyatt and Hoxton hotels, adding approximately 500 more rooms. (And the ever-mysterious Clark and Embassy hotels continue to wait in the wings for any official announcements.) As for any announced groundbreakings, no date is ever certain, although the city's forthcoming decision on the proposed expansion of the convention center--with or without AEG--will undoubtedly influence some of those projects.

A quick review of rates for upcoming hotels reveal a range from $45 at the Freehand for a hostel-style room with seven other people, up to starting rates of $379 at the soon-to-reopen Hotel Figueroa and $489 at the InterContinental.

COMPLETIONS

Have you seen it in person? It looks better in hunter's photo than it does in person. Unless they recently fixed it the yellow paint on the balconies - which are way too small - doesn't cover well and you can see through it. The ground floor units on olive have little porches that will likely have trash and homeless accumulating. I'm sure thinking it won't hold up well. The building next door is very vanilla, but to my eyes looks better done.

I've seen it in person...it's not an eye sore. I'm not saying its the greatest or even memorable.

I think people tend to over exaggerate their like or dislike of a project. This building will certainly not win any beauty contests sure. But an eyesore or something along those lines? Not really.

I doubt Cambria and Fig+Pico will break ground this year.

Broadway Palace blade sign doesn't look half bad. Next up are the rooftop signs.

Does this many units mean it is going to be tall or just bulky? I don't know how large the lot is.

Holy molly.

I found the parking garage the units will replace. It is about the same size as the base of Atelier yet this project has nearly three times as many units. So either these are super tiny units, or this project is going to be tall, very tall.
