My buddy just went over the weekend, he invited me to go with him, but I had already planned on going with my girlfriend next week.

Anyways, I'm gonna check it out. Last time I was in Montreal, I found it very similar to Toronto... I wonder if I will still feel the same way.

You are the fourth person to tell me to go to this place... Schwartz? Well you're the first person online to tell me to check it out.

Enjoy your trip!

I'd add that you should get a few fresh bagels from either St-Viateur or Fairmount (make sure to ask for warm ones!). I like adding a little cream cheese to them. They can't be compared to the hard tasteless supermarket bagels.

It's funny because when I brought my bf for the first time a couple weeks ago, all he could say was how it was very different than Toronto, and had a totally unique feel. He has been to Italy and the UK and commented how Old Montreal brought him back to the certain parts of Italy. He commented how European the city felt. It's an opinion I also have, and many people do when the visit the city. I know many in here flip out and will attack me for dare comparing Montreal to Europe. I will just say this: relax, I know Europe is over 1000 years old and Montreal is quite newer. However, one cannot deny that certain parts of the city have Euro hints that cannot be found elsewhere in Canada outside of Quebec City. For somebody who enjoys older and unique architecture with character... you will like Montreal.

Yes, no question about that. It is really nice to walk around there. Here are some google views of Winnipeg streets with historic architecture - it's interesting to check out some of the respective historical street views across Canada:

I'd agree about the "Euro" bits, but old Montreal reminds me more of second tier British cities than anything I'd expect to find in Italy.
