Very rough early idea for the CPL stadium at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon. Notably, they've chosen a N/S orientation that uses the horse-racing stand as an end-stand rather than as a sideline stand.

"After investigating both a North/South pitch orientation vs East/West, engineers convinced us that design elements should be based on a North/South. Stay tuned for more in the coming weeks!"

That’s weird (to quote the eggs commercial)
Is there not room to orient the field the other way ?

There's definitely room but the main grandstand would be too short for the length of the field (64m grandstand on a 105m long pitch), whereas it's the perfect width for the field (64m grandstand on a 68m wide pitch). Aesthetically just looks better, I guess.

FIFA regulation is stadiums orient North/South to prevent advantage from one team facing the sun. Stupid but it is what it is

Good point, that must be a thing in all rectangular-field sports now? I know IG Field, Mosaic and even Tim Hortons Field are all built on pretty well a straight N-S plane. THF was even rotated 90 degrees from the old Ivor Wynne configuration, presumably for that reason?

I'm assuming BMO is also built N-S... it sure looks like it. Is Saputo as well?

^ With that orientation, it looks like it's turning into another weird franken-stadium like Cavalry's home.

Honestly, plenty of stadiums in Europe are like this. I don't mind unique stadiums if they work. The Cavalry stadium is particularly bad, though.

I'd rather visit something like the arena in Peterborough, which feels like five different buildings smooshed into one, then another boring cookie-cutter arena like Mississauga or Blainville, to give a more Canadian example. There's definitely something to be said about unique experiences.

^ I know what you're saying, I'm not in love with cookie cutter venues either, but this type of layout with by far the biggest stand behind one of the goals is less than ideal when it comes to ambience and would also present poorly on TV. I don't see why they wouldn't orient the field the other way instead.

I realize the CPL is in its early stages right now so this probably won't be a long-term venue for the club. But it would be nice to see the clubs playing in venues that would be appealing to fans and players alike.

Don't recall seeing the Cardinal version of the RR stadium before.

I remember working at the Casino Regina when that Native band from Florida tried building that stadium here. Rumor going around casino was that the band wanted the casino as well. Of course cash talks and b.s. walks

Yup, I remember that too.... and with the Casino giving the government generally $30+ million a year, it would have definitely been a major shift here. That and with CP deciding to sell less land than originally planned; that stadium woudn't fit in the current railyard development area.

I remember that, it was one of the early proposals, maybe from around 2009, 2010 or thereabouts? Certainly a beauty design-wise although Regina still ended up with something really good.

I never paid particular attention to that. But glancing at google earth, it is incredible to see the number of stadiums (soccer specific or not) around the world that are oriented N/S.

Winnipeg's Shaw Park is oriented towards the southeast so it seem to break with the mold of other ballparks' orientation.

The orientation of these stadiums have very little to do with soccer standards for the most part. That is just a by product of how the stadiums were designed and built for their intended purposes. Other than Saputo and BMO none of the stadiums were designed specifically to cater to soccer, N/S just works for most field sports....

Apparently there was quite a cerfuffle at council today about the new arena. All in all the indications are that it will be going ahead as planned, but is likely to come in significantly over budget... which is crazy since it's already the third most expensive NHL arena ever proposed. 0_o

Welcome to the journey and this won't be the last of that kind of discussion...

If you knew about it then surely it also would have been known by others at the same time. I found no evidence of such in the following day. No reporters, no bloggers, nothing. Perhaps my sleuthing needs work.

Anyway:

Calgary Flames arena deal paused over budget concerns
Drew Anderson · CBC News · Posted: Apr 14, 2021 1:35 PM MT

"The multi-million dollar arena deal between the City of Calgary and the owners of the Flames is being paused over "a difference in the current budget estimate and the program requirements for the facility."

That's according to the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, the city-owned entity responsible for overseeing the $550 million project.

"Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC), along with our partners at the City of Calgary, provided an update to council at the April 13th closed meeting on the progress of the Event Centre," reads an emailed statement from CMLC, attributed to its president and CEO Kate Thompson.

"We started this project by developing principles and a program that would create a building that Calgarians would be proud to have in their city, and over the past several months, the team has developed a design to reach that goal."

It says the parties have agreed to pause the project to allow time to "resolve these challenges" related to the budget."

Saddledome will be the oldest arena in the NHL by 10 years when the Isles move from Nassau to their new arena next year. And before anyone gets smart, MSG and Key Arena don't really count thanks to massive renovations to both buildings.
