I like where the direction and effort is starting to go, must keep it up, one step forward no spets back.

My (our) concerns will continue but hopefully less urgently.
Over the pass 4 or 5 years, In my neighbourhood there is a significant drop in broken store front glass, smashed out car windows and psychotic out-loud yellers at all hours (mostly through the night and early mornings).

It is good to see, we need more facilities and incarceration of the mentally ill that can't lawfully function in society. We should be able to call police when we see someone screaming and ranting on the streets kicking over things and have them actually come and deal with the problem and get those people in a facility.

At long last something is going to happen, that is, if Eby's words mean anything at all.

I predict disappointment when some posters find out the detainees won't be put to hard labour.

Getting the worst few dozen people off the street will do a lot.

We don't disagree. Get the problem cases squared away, and then it's "just" more housing and voluntary detox centres.

just want the violent destructive ones kept away from society so I don't have to worry about getting attacked on my way to work or groceries

It’s funny because I was talking with friends who live in Fairview on the weekend they’ve noticed a marked uptick in passed out junkies there and in South Granville. Sounds like problem is just getting pushed farther out into the city.

I was just in South Granville last week; aside from one aggressive one who comes and goes, no change.

seems criminals don't care about gun laws, how about we try keeping anyone caught with an illegal gun in jail for a long time for a change toward common sense

That worry is entirely groundless. Has that person actually seen the gates? They can be pushed to exit with almost no force. You hear the alarm go off a lot from people (i.e. thieves and lazy AF people) exiting through the entrance gates.

I haven't been there for a while, so not sure when it was installed.

More band aids instead of actually tackling the issues.

I think the justices that routinely let out repeat offenders should be sent the bill now for every new security initiative taken by businesses and the public.

Having a security guard must be a pretty good deterrent. As soon as the guard sees someone who looks down and out, they will follow them around the store, not even pretending that they are not watching. If they were smart, they would work as a team and send a decoy in first, then the picker can go in and do the "shopping".

Thieves already do that there, so you can rest easy.

Also thieves don't care about the presence of security guards, only the physical deterrence, of which there is none.

The new(ish) SaveOnFoods in Guildford just installed gates at their store. There were gates installed at the Winners store in Park Royal quite a while ago but they have been removed in the last few months.

In another topic I work at a restaurant and we will do Turkey for Thanksgiving but not for Chrismas as there is apparently a Turkey shortage and they will do something else instead.

My friend did security for retail and other places and in retail they are insturcted not to confront any shoplifters but to only get a good description of them to pass onto the police who will most likely not do anything.

I was back at Save On yesterday and saw someone push on the gate, not sure if they were trying to leave the store through that gate or just testing it.
How it works, you push it open a bit and the alarm goes off for a set period of time, i think it was 10 seconds.
So we have another "cry wolf" to many times then people wont even bother to check on it when the alarm goes off. I did not see the security guard come running ready to tackle.

I remember doing that to a gate and it started beeping and nothing came of it.
