Newsflash:

A pile of two by fours has been placed at the Meridian on Broadway site. Could this mean that the long awaited construction of a tool shed is imminent?

Stay tuned.

Hopefully this tool shed won't be to tall for the area. It would be a shame if it cast a large tool shed shadow on the neighbors front lawn.

The Saskatoon Land Bank does not subsize lots. In fact, they not only have significant land holdings, but they also have tens of millions of dollars in the bank (profit from sales). The profits go towards other worthwhile projects in the city (such as affordable housing in the inner city) that the private sector wouldn't tackle alone.

If I remember right, there was a problem with the stability of the lot and it wouldn't support the taller structure. I believe it will be a 6ish story building; same deal - retail on main and luxury condos above.

That is one of the great things about Saskatoon, it is a small city but many of it's residents have lived and experienced other larger cities, something that always bodes well for future development.
Not exactly 70/80s. I moved there in 98 and moved back in 06. At the time, I really wasn't aware of the Alberta drain on Saskatchewan, I just wanted to see another city after growing up here. My wife was too freaked out with the possibility of living in Vancouver or Toronto, or Seattle, for that matter, so we settled on Calgary. When we first moved there, I noticed ridiculously low density in the south of Calgary around Midnapore, thinking it was some kind of horribly managed sprawl. It seems that when Calgary reached out to annex the town of Midnapore, it was far from bumping into it, so there persisted for a long while some empty space between them, that took a long time to fill in. I looked up some old plans on city development to try to figure it out, and that's how I found the Heritage and Southland plans too. Exciting ideas, having high density living structures clustered around train stops, along with office and retail space. While I was still living there, they tried to do that at the Fish Creek train station, by building a 14 storey tower, but it got nixed by the community association, screaming "we're not downtown, go build your tower somewhere else!" Jerks.

So we got out of Calgary in August 06, when house prices were still reasonable and people still seemed really happy to welcome "returnees" from Calgary. What a great time to come back to Saskatoon. In all the time I lived here previously, I never remember such enthusiasm and development.

Has anyone seen any prelim. plans for what's happening with the King George? Are they keeping the skeleton and heritage of the building or completley demolishing it?

I haven't seen a preliminary plan - but knowing that Meridian is involved - I don't think that we will be disapointed.

Not other than Saskatoon Light and Power has been doing some work in the alley removing several old poles and doing some other electrical work. I have to imagine that it is in relation to servicing that parcel of land and making room for the equipment that will congregate on the site.

^If they are goint to start construction on May 1, then they likely have a development permit in place. Anyone know of a way to track this down?

"Meridian is undertaking the restoration and redevelopment of the historic King George Hotel in downtown Saskatoon. Located at the corner of 23rd Street East and 2nd Avenue North. This building will be extensively renovated and converted with a diverse use consisting of retail on the main floor, office tenants on the second, and luxury residential condominiums above." I found this on Meridians website, as well I subscribed to stay posted to developments so I shall keep you all up to date on it!

I'm sure this has been asked before, but is there any place where I can view a complete downtown project rundown for Saskatoon?

If you visit this site http://www.saskatoon.ca/dtp/index.html it will give you a rundown of what's going on d/t but some of the information is not up to date so it would be best to google those topics and see how they are progressing. As well even if you scanned through some of the forum pages you will find some d/t developments discussed.

^That plan is very outdated, I am surprised it is still up. As for a list of current projects, I believe one was compiled on here sometime last year during a Regina vs. Saskatoon piss fest. I couldn't tell you what page it is on, and I am far to lazy to find it myself. If I am feeling up to it later tonight, I will have a look back.

Yah it is pretty dated, but it gives a rough idea of what the city has planned. To sum it up overall I'd say the developments happening d/t are the riverlanding, riversdale redevelopment (just beside d/t), 25th street extension, warehouse district, and odds and ends projects by private companies. Can anyone think of anything else?

University projects too...it would be nice to have a central place to list everything.

I am kind of ignorant of what kind of software to use, MS Paint is so old skool, and lacks cool features...any software suggestions for creating a decent map/list of Saskatoon projects?

1. Riverfront Condo - 15 story condo
2. Extra Foods site - Hotel / Condo Tower is speculated (no official word - looks like surface parking for a year.....
3. New Galaxy Theatre (The Continental is right across the street and that clump of building is fairly decrepit. The south downtown development will help this area)
4. River landing Phase 1 - 14? Story hotel/spa complex (original design was lacking, so they went back to the drawing board, will hopefully hear something by the end of the year. The plans also include a destination complex (viewing tower??), a new riverfront which is now open and a major landmark to be known a century plaza
5. River landing Phase 2. - 14 Story residential is proposed along with low rise live/work housing. Public Market, Business Centre, a Village Square, and a new riverfront will be a part of this....
6. The Meridian on Broadway - 16? 17? 18? Story condo high-rise with commercial space on the bottom floor

Riverlanding.ca has all the info if you want for the new riverfront features...

IIRC, all of the projects highlighted under development are completed, the health sciences wing is under construction, and the student union building is set to begin this summer.

Thanks for finding that SASKFTW. Even this list is somewhat outdated now (which is a good thing).

Here's what changes immediately come to my mind but in no way is it comprehensive (Please add what projects and updates I've missed everybody):

-The conversion of the KG Hotel is now well underway
-While still just a rumour, a downtown tower for Cameco is now more certain.
-1-2 new office towers (the rumoured Cameco included) projected for downtown in near future.
-new Lighthouse assisted living residence (15 floors (?), retail, plus possible market condos above)
-15 floor condo tower on Spadina beside St. John's Cathedral proposed by Remai
-Imminent demolition of Barry Hotel: what will take its place?
-Rumoured 4 storey development on former downtown Extra Foods site downtown (construction slated to begin in May)
-Sale of historic Glengarry Bldg. to NYC investor, plans to restore it to "former glory."
-Project announcement may be imminent for vacant Meridian Developments property on Broadway- mixed use building anticipated.
-Conversion of former Bayside/Ashley Furniture into office space

-And most exciting of all: River Landing Village at River Landing Phase I (has approval from City and MVA. The developer is now working to get approval for a (2?) floor expansion of hotel to attract an upscale chain. Otherwise, signs are up at the site and they hope to start digging the parkade this summer)

All this is still, overall, mostly rumour and speculation. However, the rumours are definitely piling up higher and higher. Eventually the floodgates will burst, so to speak.

Okay, here is swilley's original map with a few additions (total of 25 projects in various stages).

Be warned it is messy, I'll try to get some descriptions, photos, links, etc.

Before we post to the first page we'll need to clean everything up (e.g. stages of projects, rumored etc). Once we've identified all the projects, that is if we want to include the suburban projects and such, I can edit, or swilley can edit the first post of the Saskatoon construction thread to include all the projects.

Maybe MS paint will suffice, if we do it right
