This just makes me cringe: AllNS today reported Joe Metlege (one of Jono's principals) as saying the next "big job" for the Trinity will be installation of "colorful LED" exterior lighting.

He apparently believes he improved the look of the Vuze with that trick ("a modern touch he says he brought to the city"). To me, it's just plain tacky and really cheesy-looking. But I'm just one person; maybe most folks like it...but somehow I doubt it.

I don't see anything wrong with it if done right.

Chacun à son goût.

I guess "done right" would be the decider. Was the Vuze done right?

Good point. I do like how it was done at One77 by the Armdale roundabout.

Didn't realize lighting had been added to One77. Will have to swing by and take a look.

I’m generally in favour of accent lighting on buildings, as I think it brightens up the city, especially on the numerous wet and gloomy nights we often have around here.

Which ones are ‘done right’ will probably garner as many different opinions as which architecture is attractive and which is ugly… and there are no wrong answers, you like what you like.

So for me, I’d rather see lighting features than not. In many cases it can only be an improvement on the building design, because IMHO a lot of them don’t look so great in the daylight…

Accent lighting is one thing; tarting up a building with neon colors like the underside of some outlandish low-rider is another thing entirely.

But you're right. Where one's tastes may fall on the spectrum in between is a unique individual trait and it's impossible to please everyone.

What is a little interesting to me is that my tastes are probably not dissimilar to yours, but I have found when watching sports on TV, oddly enough, they’ll often lead back from a commercial break with ‘beauty shots’ of whatever city the game is being played in, and I have found that collectively, the garish lighting on groups of buildings actually makes the streetscape come alive and look much better than it probably does in the daytime. Maybe not unlike Christmas lights do this time of year… which I also like.

So, for me, bring it on! YMMV.

Hmmm...what are your views on the Vuze?

I haven't been in the area enough at night to take note of it, actually, and I haven't found a good video (all I could find is this: https://youtu.be/DclQx-4JwWM?si=NwrdF7Gyhepq0J51).

So... based on that, the VUZE label looks a little silly, but the vertical light strips are okay... not spectacular, but they don't make me wretch or anything.

If they have some kind of strobe animation or anything like that... not a fan, but overall (other than the lettering) not horrible. I would prefer the lighting to accentuate the building's features a little more, though, rather than just randomly placed there like they seem to be. Not something that moves me one way or the other, really.

IMHO.

Got it. I think generally we're largely calibrated, but the Vuze looks like a childish prank to me.

I say the above with the context that I have never considered Fenwick Towers to be overly attractive, even in its best form. So there wasn’t much there to ruin, IMHO.

At least the dirty concrete look is gone.

I get that for sure, but I think the opportunity for much better esthetic improvement was squandered.

Agreed. It could always be better. And I don’t hate the base building either, it’s just that both the building and the lighting don’t tip the scales majorly (for me) one way or the other (except the VUZE text which doesn’t belong on a residential building IMHO - if it were branding for a hotel or some other business, then sure).

There, beat that one to death, didn’t we?

It was squandered by the city when the original design encroached on the view plane by a foot and the city nixed the addition.
