Really? Are you sure? I disagree. "Open relationships" are just merely by-products of our self-centred, ignorant, and micro-wave society. Our society is solely based on getting the most value with the least amount of effort that we saturate every aspect of our lives with what feels the best. Some would argue that this is what is right, that we must life to satisfy ourselves because that is the only thing to live for. Unfortunately, life means much more than just satisfying our own cravings. There is something out there beyond our own intrinsic motivation. If a husband tells his wife that he wants to get intimate, and a wife does not feel like it, it's so easy for her to say "go see some strippers" or "go look at some porn" to get him off her back, and it's so easy for the husband to comply. The truth is, this does not address the underlying issue. Instead of talking things through, the couple resorts to an easy fix which really isn't a fix at all, but rather a temporary solution. The problem with temporary solutions is self explainable: they are temporary. If the husband has the same issue two nights later, the response from the wife will be the same. Over an indefinite period of time, their relationship begins to deteriorate as both parties succumb to doing what is easiest, as society has told us to. Whether they realize it or not, they begin to harm their relationship. How? As a man views other women as objects, not only does he lose respect for them, but he also loses respect for his own wife. How could he not? Upon losing respect for his wife, he begins to treat her worse and worse, and in turn she does the same to him. If there are children involved, the children witness this and it socially damages them. Perhaps it will lead to a divorce, or perhaps it will just lead to a terrible relationship. Either way, none of these options are good for anyone other than divorce lawyers or councillors. In the end, both of the people involved have learned to use the easiest solution to their issues. To do what feels good, and usually what feels good is the easiest solution requiring the least amount of effort.
As time progresses and more and more people subscribe to doing "what feels good", society capitalizes on this and perpetuates it within the media, media-driven stereotypes, and hyper-consumption cycles because this is what the population desires, and it is what we are told to desire. In turn, it breeds a lazy, fat, apathetic, and uncaring population, including our politicians, academics, and capitalists. Now we are just a people who care for only ourselves, and want only what we want all because we don't have the willpower to deny the most primitive of our desires or sustain endured patience to talk things through and deal with issues.
Instead of fixing the issues that matter to us, we put band-aids over them. We have become a microwave society centred on pleasure and ease. We are going to die regretting every moment of it.
