I'm glad you answered him, ProphetM, because I didn't know what it was either. My guess was an electrical substation or some other infrastructure.(which it is)

But what about the tunnel:
This is probably a stupid question but where the other end of it?? I don't see. The only place it could be in the photo (without being seen) would make it the world's shortest tunnel.

3 screengrabs offer an extremely RARE look at the Gold Cup Coffee Shop. (1970?)

From the beginning of the short film.

then the camera pans out.

If memory serves me, the Gold Cup was an early hang-out for male hustlers & street trade...Can anyone confirm that?

(it would explain why the images are from a porn)

Yes, it had a gay crowd that spilled over onto the Boulevard every night. Troy Walker was well known at the Gold Cup.

The construction site in that picture is from 1969 and was located at Wilshire and Westwood.

The construction site in the Columbo episode Blueprint for Murder, likely filmed in 1971, was for the 26 floor tower located at 1801 Century Park East in Century City.

The Gold Cup is still there in the guise of a 7-ELEVEN.

It's a nice Art Deco/Streamline building...It deserves to be something other than a 7-ELEVEN. .(in my opinion)

I think the 7-11 is actually in where the Union Pacific ticket agency was during the era of modernists. If you want to bring back Deco buildings then it might help to also bring back some Streamstyled trains.Otherwise, what’s the point in the place you’re going to if you don’t have “half the fun is getting there” as the good folks at Cunard told us. Maybe someone can get that slogan tattoed on their torso on that corner now?

The 7-ELEVEN in the Gold Cup photo is the Hollywood Barber College. In the current photo the Gold Cup is a Tattoo place.

In the 1947 directory, info from Martin Turnbull's site:
The Suzie-Q – 6700 Hollywood Blvd – Nightly Entertainment in Hollywood – Dining – Dancing – Cocktails – Corner Hollywood & Las Palmas.
In some online blogs it's noted as a place the Black Dahlia visited. (Is there any place she did not visit?)
I don't recall seeing any photo of The Suzie-Q.

In the 1950's the location was The Royal Room, mentioned by me before, with the Union Pacific ticket agency next door mentioned above by Alkapone.

The close end seems to have frontage on the street (Grand Ave.) so it looks like a building, but the far end seems to extend down from the roof a lot farther, so I think that's the actual tunnel entrance and a long section of the tunnel roof has been exposed. If there is an 'attic' space above the tunnel ceiling, that would explain how the tunnel could go under Grand Ave., but the roof structure is still high enough to have frontage on Grand as we see in the photo.

There is of course new construction over all of this, and the Grand Ave. seen in this photo would be today's lower Grand.

Had my noggin cleaned ala flattop many times at that barber college as a Hollywood kid in the ‘60’s. Ma’ hair was so thick they’d gather around to do a demonstration to the plebes, like those older doctors taking the crowd on his rounds of hospital patients…and it felt the same being in that chair.
