Alstom is a subcontractor of RTM, and RTM is a subsidiary of RTG.

They're as much a part of RTM/RTG as Stadler is a part of TNEXT.

I'm gonna guess announcing phase 3 LRT is going ahead....and will be routed directly into the heart of Kanata-Carleton. Just in time for the by-election on Thursday!

He just said last week that there won't be any funding until it's sorted out. So by any logic when it's still shut down he can't announce. Wait it's Ford so logic not really a factor.

They're more involved in RTG than Stadler is in TNext - The city procured the Stadler vehicles directly, they didn't leave it up to the constructors to go find something. Might be one of the few lessons learned from stage 1 that was in time to be implemented on stage 2.

My bet is widening the remainder of the 417 West to provide a "reliable" alternative to the O-Train, instead of, you know, funding Calring transit priority and Baseline BRT, which would provide redundancy to the transit system.

Sent an email to Sutcliffe my Councillor and Gower (only one who might give a dam) about Carling and Baseline's redundancy role. I get holding Stage 3, but Sutcliffe should be offering solutions and improvements, not jumping on the transit hating bandwagon.

Before Stage 1 opened, I complained about the lack of redundancy. The ongoing problems prove the validity that we need redundancy badly.

Sadly, the Confed Line is probably doing more long-term damage to OC Transpo than the pandemic.

And budget cuts forced upon them by the City. It will be a decade before we get anything close to the pre-pandemic ridership. Line 2 re-opening, if it goes smoothly, will provide a good boost, though I'm sure it will be shut down again before the decade's over for further "upgrades" that should have been done during this shut-down.

The on-time, on-budget mantra has come back to bite us badly, although the first part failed anyways.

In order to keep on budget, we required very large trains compared to the existing Citadis model and the wheel assembly was not upgraded sufficiently to match the expanded capacity and expected capabilities of the trains.

Likewise with the Trillium Line, which will be opened at maximum capacity. There is no reasonable upgrade path, which is stupid for what should be a 100 year project. We just keep band-aiding the Trillium Line and maintaining many aspects of the original temporary plan. And Phase 2 will mean that it won't be a strictly student train, which means further closures will be politically unpopular. But we didn't consider this, because that is future politicians' problem.

Funny how the original plan would have provided at least a bit of redundancy and the original street running problems would have been eliminated with the opening of the Confed Line.

Warning, the 12 is an elusive beast. It may show, it may not, it may show in groups an hour later than scheduled. I imagine it's the same for all of these routes.

It is still infuriating to me that we just went through a zillion-dollar rebuild of Montreal Road, using a design that, quite deliberately, results in no better transit performance in the westbound direction, and slightly worse in the eastbound. No improvements in time, in speed, in reliability, no time points to help keep the 12 in particular from brigading, junk shelters, and "real-time" screens that still haven't been installed.

The REM had been undergoing testing that required 30 days of problem free running before they opened. Maybe this LRT should stay closed till they can show 30 days of problem free running......

I mean, we've seen that countless times. It breaks down every 4 months, more or less, so we get 3-4 months of reliable service, a week or two with no train, 3-4 months of reliable service... couple weeks of partial service for maintenance... a few good weeks, one bad wheel bearing, the entire system shut-down...

Denley's been publishing a few pieces that kind of make a lot of sense recently, even defending Ottawa and the O-Train. Is he ok?

I bolded three key paragraphs, which are important to remember. GTA gets blank cheques. In fact, they don't even need to propose or plan their lines, and request funding in many cases. The Province does that for them.

Denley: Doug Ford dumps on Ottawa LRT, ducks his own Toronto LRT mess

Toronto's Eglinton Crosstown light rail project, started in 2011, is a long saga of cost overruns, delays and lawsuits. The project is managed by a provincial agency.

Published Jul 25, 2023

Last week, Ontario Premier Doug Ford offered the opinion that Ottawa’s LRT was “a real disaster.” OK, thanks. That helps a lot.

What the premier forgot to mention is that the provincial government has a troubled transit project of its own. Toronto’s beleaguered Eglinton Crosstown light rail project is managed by Metrolinx, a provincial government agency. Infrastructure Ontario is also involved. The Eglinton project is a long saga of cost overruns, delays and lawsuits with no end in sight.

Construction of the 19-kilometre, 25-station Eglinton Crosstown line began in 2011 and was supposed to be completed in 2020. It hasn’t started to run yet and probably won’t start until next year. No fixed date has been set. Ottawa’s 12.5-kilometre, 13-station LRT started construction in 2013 and began service in 2019.

Things haven’t gone smoothly between Metrolinx and the consortium of companies building the Eglinton line. The provincial agency alleges that there are 260 outstanding construction deficiencies and the consortium is suing over last-minute changes it says are outside the contract. The government says it won’t set a service date until it sees a credible schedule from the contractor.

As time went on, costs went up by nearly $1 billion. The Toronto project is expected to cost $5.3 billion for construction alone. The good news for Torontonians is that it is not the city’s problem. The provincial government is paying the entire construction cost. All Toronto has to do is operate the system and do day-to-day maintenance.

Although Ford says, “We put a tremendous amount of money into the LRT” here, Ottawa did not get anything like that kind of deal. The federal and provincial governments each paid $600 million, one-third of an early cost estimate. That left city taxpayers on the hook for $900 million.

As a result of the federal and provincial shortfalls, the city had a $2.1-billion hard cap for construction of the rail project. To stay within that budget, engineering and station changes had to be made to reduce cost. Ottawa didn’t have much choice. Neither the former provincial Liberal government nor the federal government was willing to help. Now, that cost-cutting is portrayed as some kind of stupidity on the part of city management. Why didn’t they just spend more? Easy question: the local taxpayers couldn’t afford it.

Notwithstanding the Toronto mess, Ford thought things were so bad in Ottawa that the whole affair had to be examined in minute detail by a provincial inquiry. Fair enough, but why the double standard?

There has been no provincial inquiry called in Toronto. Instead, Metrolinx has minimized information on the Eglinton project. It’s not all Metrolinx’s fault. According to communications obtained by the Toronto Star through a freedom of information request, the provincial government is limiting the information Metrolinx can release.

Asked last month whether he still has confidence in Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney, the politician ultimately responsible for the Eglinton Crosstown project, Ford assured the legislature that he did. There you go, folks. What more do you need to know?

The standards applied in Ottawa were a little different. Although there was plenty of LRT information brought to city council, the provincial inquiry found that then-mayor Jim Watson and the city’s top bureaucrat didn’t keep council fully informed about changes to testing requirements for the new trains. Commissioner William Hourigan lambasted the two for that, but it’s small potatoes compared to the stonewalling the provincial government is doing on the Eglinton LRT.

We do have a mess in Ottawa, no doubt about it, but Ford’s comments on our LRT are hypocritical when a similar project is stumbling on his own watch. Ford doesn’t think anyone should be held accountable for the Toronto fiasco, at least not himself, his minister or government agencies. What makes things so different here?

Looks like Ford was just here to highlight investments his government made in Ottawa like CHEO and the 417 highway bridge replacements.

He was asked about Phase 3 and obviously not clear what qualifiers the system needs to reach to get Phase 3 funding. Someone specifically asked about the axles/bearings since they would take 18 months. He just said "lets fix the problems on the other stages and then we will look at it."

My guess is we will see some commitment close to June 2026

Unless they are desperate for seats in the NCR, I can't see Stage 3 getting funded. And do those seats in Stittsville and Kanata really flip?
