I went to yet another movie at the Bytowne today. Which is great.

I'm really not feeling the design of this tower. It looks dated and cheap. The western face should have been built to a higher standard. We'll see how it turns out but the precast is a good 15 floors up and the glass is now roughly 8 floors so it's pretty obvious what it's going to look like.

Fingers crossed for an interesting roofline and maybe some lighting like the Envie building. If they can give me that I will grudgingly accept it.

The ratio of spandrel panel vs spandrel glass got flipped on this one. Yet another Wish.com building in Ottawa.

In my opinion, this is one of the worst looking towers going up in Ottawa right now.

Totally agree with you. It screams cheapness.

Especially when you compare it to something like 412 Sparks. I wonder what the actual difference in construction costs is between the two? Is it cheapness or laziness....or both?

I picture a conversation at Rimap

'This design is a little too...'deluxe' for Ottawa, don't you think?'

'Hmmm...true, nobody in Ottawa is going to care if we cut some costs here. Let's go with this general shape, but let's go with lowest bidder materials and dumb it down for Ottawa.'

Can confirm, I went to see it in person this weekend and...

Pre-fab panels on the podium are cheap, very little windows on the tower. And the entire back wall is basically a blank wall (but "camouflaged" with random grey/charcoal/red concrete panels). Can't think of any redeeming qualities.

Yes. I guess they saw the ugly but now looking good in comparison Andaz and saw how it seems to have made no impact on bookings. $600 a night when I looked for mid June dates. I know ugly or not assuming it's cheaper than the Andaz it will be my go to when I need a hotel in Ottawa.

Its quite bad. When the renderings were floating around, I thought to myself they dumbed down their usual designs for Ottawa, but at least it will be better than what's on Rideau now, with high quality materials. Never thought they would dumb down both design and materials.

Doesn't bod well for the Moxy and Renaissance projects, which will be far more prominent in our skyline.

I'm terrified about the possibility of them butchering the next two as well, especially the new tallest building in Downtown Ottawa. I hope they Main+Main does a good job on the first two towers and Rimap sticks with the same materials and design.

Can't wait for more 24floor monstrosities like this to go up while we are scared of 40-65 floors because of winds and shadows.

And the neighborhood crippling traffic jam that buildings over 27 stories create, don't forget that! 50 story buildings have expressway levels of traffic going in and out of their garages (according to every Ottawa Community Association's Head Karen).

Oufff. Tacky and ugly. What a great way to win over tourists visiting the city.

Cross-post.

Good for them for trying something with the blank wall. It's... intresting to say the least.

Why even build it as a blank wall? The tiny lot behind it is common area or pool for the blue condo building, no?

I doubt that would be redeveloped anytime soon. Not impossible, but very unlikely IMO.

The hotel is built on the lot line, so legally has to be a blank wall, even if the St George's pool area is never redeveloped.

We really need rules that prevent towers to be built on the lot line.

That's a lot of construction in the market a few blocks away from each other, nice! Seemed to be quite a lull after Andaz.

Speaking of, wonder when those 2 parking lots will be redeveloped. The one next to Andaz I thought was a Hampton Inn but got rejected I believe? The one behind was supposed to be Andaz 2.0 and be condos or rentals, no?

Did I dream or was there also supposed to be an Andaz extension?

No, you're not dreaming . Those nightmares were real.

After "Story-Of", this has become the ugliest tower (and biggest disappointment) for me.
