TransEd, the company building the Valley Line Southeast LRT expansion, has identified 140 kilometres of oxidized copper signalling cables that need to be replaced, which will delay the project further. In a news release, TransEd said replacing the cables now will allow it to run the line more reliably and reduce “future operational impacts.” The company will cover the costs as per its public-private partnership contract with the city. Spokesperson Dallas Lindskoog said the repairs are expected to take six to eight weeks and that while the oxidized cables don’t present a safety issue, the company is investigating why new cables are already corroding. Mayor Amarjeet Sohi said he was beyond frustrated by the latest discovery. “This LRT project should have been in service in 2020 and here we are in 2023, and that’s absolutely unacceptable,” Sohi said. There is still no launch date for the line, which has already been delayed four times.

Likely what the P3 electrical engineer specified? or the City base line spec required? I wonder what the City is using on the City owned Capital line.

Thanks for the link Coldrsx. Insightful.

I wonder how much truth there is concerning the letter that was read in the clip? If the city had asked for a pier design not used anywhere else, is the city not partly responsible? I agree with Cartmell that it was TransED's responsibility to design and make noted adjustments if they felt it was needed. I did a google search of elevated train piers and did not find any piers that looked like ours. Lots of Y shaped piers but none missing the wedge. Of course that is not exhaustive or meaningful but whenever you introduce something different than what has been done before, there is risk, is there not?

I hope there is an independent audit on this.

More communication and such although they feature an injured worker before moving on to downtown crime.

The question I didn't hear asked or answered was whether the experience level in building projects like this was comparative, superior or inferior to the brain trust at TransEd. I think this is important. It seems that the South-East branch was designed and constructed by relative newbies to the mass transit infrastructure business.

How many mass transit infrastructure projects have Marigold's constituent companies completed? Where are they? We don't need "perfection" as Knack carefully warns but a track record can reveal a lot about expectations.

The two other main partners with Marigold are Colas and Parsons.

Looks like Colas has extensive experience designing and engineering 'complex' railway projects.

Parsons looks to have some depth too.

Neat, but I'm not sure I'd want to live in those lofts now.

Welp....I knew this was going to happen. I just got the call to Inspect the LRT Piers for Weld cracks and structural engineering. I will post a couple picks when I'm up in the man basket. This should be interesting lol.

Uh oh, are these for the piers that have already been 'fixed'? Let's hope it's just double checking that work, if so, and not for inspecting new issues...

I wonder which party requested the inspection.

City of Edmonton. They are now being Proactive I guess. Welds on the support braces are visually cracking and there is a host of other deficiencies that are arising. From a another Engineer that had concerns, there are MANY other problems that are now relevant!! Yikes.

BTW, I called this last year lol.

My take (now that you shared this) is this matter is headed to immediate mediation under terms of the contract but will end up in court sooner than than this project is turned over - as the failed piers may/likely require replacement. This could take another 2 years to replace, maybe longer ... as some/all?existing piers may need to be removed and some tracks possibly realigned and constructed. While this is all happening the P3 team is fighting it out with the Structural Engineering firm who is trying to blame the constructor of the piers if the shit will stick. Meanwhile the City is fucked and the public will set their eyes on the current city council.

Can you at least use the right 'too', or even describe the problem so it makes sense?

What are you a Level 3 weld inspector? Are you actually an engineer? A material tech?

In pretty sure the structural engineer age the contractor are one in the same. It's a joint venture.
How exactly is the city fucked?

Each has experience in mass transit infrastructure.

Colas has completed rail projects in Egypt, Vietnam, and Poland. Parsons has completed a few design and engineering challenges including a P3 project in Chicago. That project focused on grade separation so they might be back in Edmonton when we have to rebuild the segment of line at the 104 Avenue and 109 Street intersection.

Thanks for the links.

If you live in Oliver and drive to or from downtown or Oliver Unity Square your commute is going to be different.

I saw an elderly couple stopping at the light to cross 104 Avenue the other day and I asked them if they were excited that a new LRT line was going to be built right down the middle of the road. They looked at me and laughed and shook their heads in disbelief.

About a quarter of Oliver's residents are over the age of 60 and there are several old age homes within striking distance of the new tramway.
