There is a painfully large amount of irony at play here.

It goes to show how the government is assisting in killing more people by being soft on drug use, as well as hastening the timeline on getting more people to be hooked onto those 'free clean drugs" that they use tax payers' money to purchase.

Aaron Gunn is right after all.

I promise Vancouver, Nanaimo and BC are mentioned the most here.

Thank you Aaron for highlighting the problems that are escalating in Vancouver and Victoria! The ONLY addicts I know who have had a good success rate are those that were able to get professional help AND a good support system. NONE have ever said THOSE drugs the government supplied were a help in getting me into recovery! In fact the initial 'FREE' CERB money contributed to the death of my dear friend's son along with two others! We need more recovery centers, more support to help people get clean and LESS drugs on our streets. Kudos to Danielle Smith for seeing the light and DOING something about it!

Is that what anecdotes show?

My opinions on safe supply are mixed. On one hand, I see the effects drugs have on people and think any access is too much. On the other hand, I have seen statistics that support the efficacy of safe supply and that other provinces with less lenient stances still have problems.

I just want to see progress.

TIL that incel activists (and anonymous YouTube commenters) are reliable sources of information. "Tough on drugs" policies have never worked.

We are definitely number 1 when it comes to Fentanyl deaths, here's an Aussie production on us:

I just wish Australians will not buy our idea that "safe supply" works.

Let's see those statistics that you are claiming, and who the people are who make those "statistics".

We are not seeing progress even though "clean supply" places are increasing: all we see are statistics getting worse every year: much much worse.

Just think about it this way: when you are making it so much easier for people including kids to get their hands on drugs, there is a higher chance that there will be more people becoming addicted to drugs. With that, more people will overdose, as it just takes one time when they take the wrong combinations to kill them, especially when they are alone at home far away from those "safe" facilities. Not all addicts are sober enough to be close to safe supply sites, unless you open one at every corner in every street and alleyway throughout the city, province or country. How is that possible without the whole country bankrupting itself?

I see a lot more young people being poisoned now, and likely due to the ease for them to get a hold of the drugs. We all know that many getting free drugs are also selling them, and perhaps that is also why younger and younger people are hooked. There is simply no human decency and good moral values at play here. See this:

A warning that we are also turning into San Francisco, more needs to be done to overturn the tide:

Bad policies cause this, and in many ways, we are also very similar to San Fran.

the guy I know who lives down there in the DTES and has since the 90s just posted something about life there and one of the things he brings up is how the "advocates" VANDU really are doing nothing but trying to get more free drugs and handouts and normalize drug use and they have no interest in helping addicts get help or cleaned up. Apparently some Chinatown property owners have been seen stuffing bread into awnings of vacant storefronts to attract pigeons and rats to make the empty storefront unusable in hopes of it being demolished and redeveloped so they can cash in themselves. They don't want Chinatown to be viable and prefer it to decay as it is to their advantage.

We have minimal safer supply here so far, so it's impossible to say to what extent it's preventing overdoses. As you noted, most deaths are young men who die at home. Only some of them are included in the 100,000 people with diagnosed opioid use disorder in BC; many are casual or recreational drug users. Only 5% of diagnosed opioid users have accessed prescribed safer supply.

Way too many nefarious and greedy folks at work here that's for sure. Otherwise, how can a good city let a historically significant part of downtown get into the current state? The rest of the population have just been duped to go along with this.

I will never buy into the idea that safe supply or injection sites work. There may be no deaths recorded at the premises, but safe supply or the ease to shoot up will lead to more people getting hooked, especially when society normalizes drug-use. There is just no way an addict will always be able to get their supply from "safe" places, or even want to be at injection sites. An addict will not be able to reject this temptation when offered something to get high, anytime, anywhere, and it only takes this one time for him or her to be killed.

Do you reject the idea of safe supply for other hazardous and addicting drugs like alcohol?

How many people die from alcohol overdoses? If they do, all liquor stores should be shut down and liquor banned.

Alcohol poisoning kills three to four thousand Canadians a year. But we're not going back to Prohibition, because all that did was increase organized crime.

You seriously didn't think that alcohol ever kills anyone?

That mentality does not hold water. as booze is a drug and sold everywhere but the city is not filled with drunks falling down in the streets. Having drugs decriminalized is not making more addicts. Having mental health or health issues is what is a gateway to usage. Smoking weed was supposed to be the gateway drug to hard drugs. THis is all US bullshit drug policy
