There is a lot happening on the supply coming in and out of Saint John so I think it deserves some recognition.

CSX recently acquired the Pan-Am Railway running from Boston to Mattawamkeag where the lines connect with NBSR. They are investing over $100 million to upgrade the track.

The executive vice president of operation for CSX cited Port Saint John as the business case for the acquisition.

In a recent article, CN Rail says they expect to grow their intermodal shipments by 450,000 over the next three years.
Quote:
CN also expects expansion projects at other ports, including Vancouver; Montreal; Saint John, New Brunswick; Mobile, Ala., and New Orleans, to drive international intermodal growth.
I think we are all very familiar with the activity CP Rail has brought to the city thus far. I noticed they were testing picking up containers on the new cranes the other day.

I'm curious to see what comes on the Port's plans to get into the roll-on roll-off. Dever Road is very busy with automobile shipments. Would automobile ships start calling on the port?

The port also just finished adding the extra tracks behind the green storage warehouse thing. You can really see it going southbound over the harbour bridge.

I monitor the CPKC trains through Maine on a daily basis and the autoracks (car/truck/SUV carriers) have been growing slowly but surely. They are a part of every train every day. Within the last few weeks one eastbound train had 29 autoracks on it. I believe the NBSR Ponderosa (Dever) yard has capacity for 18 autoracks. At least the auto ditribution portion of the yard. It is common for the trains to have 12-16 and is becoming more common to see 20+.

RE: the CSX/NBSR connection - Here is a link that shows the entire process of upgrading from sectional (clic-clac) track to continuous welded rail. It is way beyond just replacing old rail with new.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3qbsmFmnuQ

That process is being done on the entire CSX mainline from Bangor east, and the rest of Maine/New England mainline that doesn't already have CWR. There has been no/very little direct interchange traffic between NBSR and US railroads for years. It will be very interesting to see how traffic will change once that interchange is rebuilt.

I expect CSX will run a train from Mattawamkeag to Waterville, ME initially. CSX currently runs a daily train (M426 east/M427 west) from Waterville to Selkirk, NY, which is one of CSX's main yards. From the Selkirk, NY hump yard, trains get remade and sent to their end destinations. Eventually, as traffic is established, CSX would run a dedicated train from Selkirk to Mattawamkeag. CSX wants all of Irving's business to the eastern US and beyond so they have been talking to each other for awhile. That is how I see it, but CSX, NBSR, DP World and Port Saint John may have a totally different plan.

Port Saint John is also now classified as a foreign trade zone. That has only been in effect for a relatively short time. I am not aware of ALL the implications of that, but as I understand it, it allows movement of goods in and out of the port and the country without having to pay tariffs up front - as long as it is within a certain time period. Under certain conditions, that time period is quite long. It encourages bringing in unfinished goods or raw materials, and adding value through converting the raw materials to finished products. All without having to pay tariffs until the finished item is shipped to the end user. And if that user is foreign, they only pay their own local tariffs. So a business could manufacture products in Saint John for the US market, or anywhere else, using imported foreign materials, with no added Canadian tariffs. If I am understanding that correctly, that should encourage all kinds of businesses to set up shop locally. The foreign trade zone designation possibly has more meaning internationally than within Canada.

Finally, it appears that the cover over the in-filled portion of the new pier may be being removed. Is that really happening or am I just seeing things?

By cover do you mean the meters of rock they filled in well above the pier. I was confused why they did that other than to let it settle in but I thought the amount they went for was excessive.

Yes, exactly. I figured it was some sort of packing to make sure the "stuff" below cured appropriately. They have gone from 200 lb/sq ft to 2000 lb/sq ft on the new pier. That probably needs to be compressed for a while. Maybe job done?

A point of interest - CPKC is a "Co-Host Premium Sponsor"of Port Days at the end of this month. One of the events planned is "CPKC's History in Saint Andrews, NB" which would include the Van Horne estate and the Algonquin Hotel. Hapag-Lloyd is a silver sponsor. DP World and Nutrien are each platinum sponsors. Other interesting names are Envision Saint John as a silver sponsor. Irving and Canpotex are gold sponsors. And YSJ is a bronze sponsor. It's interesting to see YSJ taking part.

CPR used to have a huge presence in Saint John. I remember taking CPR's Montreal train to go skiing at Big Squaw Mountain Maine back in the late 70's. The train stopped in Greenville Junction in the middle of the night and the mountain hotel would send vans to pick up guests. There was a mural in the club car showing the CP rail network. Vancouver was the western terminus and Saint John was shown as the eastern terminus with CP steamships offering connections to the UK via the various Empress liners (it was a very old club car even in 1977 ) My parents could remember the "boat trains" coming from Montreal and delivering passengers right onto the westside piers. Passengers would walk off the train and right up the liner's gangway.

Seems like what is old is new again at least in terms of CP's involvement in Saint John.

Nice to see the Jellybean buildings didn't die in vain. Still a shame though.

In the upcoming Common Council Meeting on Tuesday, May.23rd, there is a public hearing date for July 24th for two proposals.
  • 384 Lancaster Avenue, (PID: 00386466) = To support the conversion of the building into general retail. (This is the building that JYSK reportedly purchased).

  • Adjacent to 2100 Sandy Point Road (PID:55238471) = The proposed Section 59 amendments will facilitate an amended development proposal for Ethos Ridge.

Retail Drive alignment project is in the upcoming Council Agenda. It's a "Initiate Stop-Up and Closure for Portion of Retail Drive". There is a report and a sketch attached. They are closing part A and part B on the sketch. A public hearing about this will be on June.12th. https://pub-saintjohn.escribemeetings.com/filestream.ashx?DocumentId=14535

Link to the sketch: https://pub-saintjohn.escribemeetings.com/filestream.ashx?DocumentId=14536

Quote:
"The City of Saint John is actively planning to re-align and re-construct a portion of Retail Drive to more effectively align Retail Drive with Ashburn Lake Road. This realignment would remove the need for one of the two sets of traffic lights at the street intersection with Rothesay Avenue, thus alleviating one traffic queuing station for motorists. This realignment would significantly reduce the waiting times for motorists at this street intersection and would minimize any safety concerns for motorists and pedestrians alike. The purpose of this report is to initiate the process to stop-up and close two portions of Retail Drive, identified on the attached sketch as Part “A” having an area of approximately 3,165 square metres and Part “B” having an area of approximately 116 square metres for the purpose of consolidating it with other adjoining property not required for the realignment of Retail Drive.

REPORT

The City of Saint John, along with funding partners, including the Provincial and Federal governments, have reached a funding agreement that would provide for the realignment and reconstruction of the street intersection between Ashburn Lake Road, Rothesay Avenue and Retail Drive. It is expected this project would begin in 2024 and be completed in 2025. The City is actively involved in negotiations with several stakeholders to acquire the parcels of land required for this project. If, following the Public Hearing on June 12th, Council resolves to give 1 st and 2nd reading to the proposed amendment to the Street Closing By-law, it is staff’s intention to delay 3rd reading until such time as the realignment project construction is completed.

The purpose of this report is to initiate the process to stop-up and close two portions of Retail Drive, identified on the attached sketch as Part “A” having an area of approximately 3,165 square metres and Part “B” having an area of approximately 116 square metres for the purpose of consolidating it with other adjoining property not required for the re-alignment of Retail Drive right-of-way. Public Works and Transportation are supportive of the request to close the two portions identified on the attached sketch of Retail Drive with the understanding that there will be a new configuration for Retail Drive to intersect with Rothesay Avenue and Ashburn Lake Road. There is municipal infrastructure contained within the portions of Retail Drive being proposed to be stopped up and closed and that infrastructure will need to be removed or rerouted in the overall realignment construction project.

The recommendation contained in this report is to set the Public Hearing date and to authorize staff to commence the advertising for consideration of street closure".

If this could get approval it would be amazing! I can't see the public not wanting to get rid of the traffic jam it causes.

Hopefully if it does become a reality, we see any activity for a fly over to get on the highway going south. Might be tricky to line it up with Rockwood being there but there might be a way?

We discussed this last year: https://www.skyscraperpage.com/forum/showthread.php?t=120401&page=622

i had to re-upload my sketch. https://imgur.com/a/QgmZZ5J

Saint John would be better served by a traditional, simple overpass across the highway from Ashburn Lake to where it used to connect to Ashburn, allowing for onramps and offramps on both sides. Replace the Ashburn Lake-Rothesay intersection with a roundabout or improved intersection that aligns Ashburn Lake and Retail.

This would take care of westbound traffic as well as northbound without needing to build something crazy. You'd probably have to upgrade the west end of Ashburn and Ashburn Lake too but road reconstruction is peanuts compared to overbuilding and making a second One Mile House, except overbuilt.

It would be much, much cheaper, less contingent on a megaproject, and would serve the same purpose as the link.

Like so: https://imgur.com/a/UEe4dzA
EDIT: in retrospect, you can do this even cheaper. Just build an overpass from Ashburn Lake to the south end of Ashburn and clean up the Foster Thurston/Ashburn/ramp intersection. A little nonstandard, but it would only be 300m of overpass/embankment and 500m of upgraded street.

Here's a slow CSX M427 bound for Selkirk, NY and then points beyond. It has a significant amount of Irving paper and lumber. The two days from Waterville to Worcester, MA are most likely due to rebuilding New England rail.

CSX/NBSR may have achieved some sort of interchange point at Mattawamkeag. Otherwise, it possibly went to Brownville and then to Bangor (CSX) via CPKC.

Would CSX be allowed to bring their own train into Saint John, or have to interchange with NBSR?

AllNewbrunswick is reporting that the Ethos Ridge project is being resurrected and reworked. Apparently the revised 167 until proposal is to go before Common Council on July 24th. Proponents say construction could start this year.

Fingers crossed, we need some of these stalled projects to start moving again.
