I'm getting really excided for the extra population these will bring right downtown. 525 units with probably almost 1,000 people living in the building is going to be a boon for foot traffic and local businesses.

I'm excited in a few short years hopefully we will have a lively downtown and not a barren wasteland after 6:00pm.

Honestly, downtown is in fully recovered mode. Try eating at a restaurant or going for a beer downtown. You're looking at 1-2 hour waits most places unless you made a reso. It's getting actually kind of annoying. Which is why I'm supportive of constantly adding commercial. If you keep bringing people without additional commercial space you get places that are too busy, and commercial rents fly upward so only Starbucks can afford.

I'm excited not only for the additional people, but the additional commercial space as James St and other nearby high quality commercial spaces are pretty much tapped out. There are some vacancies but mostly owned by shitty landlords with decrepit units.

On that note we tried to go to the new seafood restaurant - Conversate - where absynthe used to be - and it is INSANE - 165 dollars for a tomahawk steak on the dinner menu - 20 dollars for a salad - we left and we just said we can't justify paying these prices - we went to the french cafe across the st on king william and paid half the prices - still a bit pricy, and the menu was more limited, but we felt better about it. Just because you CAN charge more, does not mean you SHOULD.

I mean, Conversate is expensive but if the food justifies the cost then it's fair. It isn't in my price range, but if it works for someone, then hey. My coworker went to Shakespeare's for Valentine's dinner and racked up a $700 bill grabbing an app, lobster, ostrich steak, and a few drinks. Whatever you want to spend I guess.

To be fair, Tomahawk steaks are meant to be shared, it's almost 4lbs $700 for vday dinner? My second and third cars combined cost wasn't much more than that

The upside is that if there are restaurants downtown which are still surviving despite high prices, then that's a sign the downtown is continuing to turn a corner.

This is true, and aside from shakespeares king william is probably the most expensive restaurant strip downtown - well.. not that there are many - its mainly james street and king william in the core hehe.. but one does expect the prices to be the most expensive right in the core.. but still.. I had a tomahawk steak in the lister restaurant - the first one before all the shenanigans, and that "only" cost me 50 dollars..

Hamilton actually has a surprising lack of high end restaurants - restaurants like conversate are a dime a dozen in Toronto. It’s a good thing to see a wider mix of options IMO - it’s a sign of a healthier downtown. But yea, that’s not in my budget either.

It's nice to have higher end restaurants in the mix - may not be for everyone but a proper city needs to have some places where you feel like you can dress and impress

I hope the higher ends thrive and survive. While not in my range the City needs these options to be a "real" city as some suggest.

No doubt if we didnt have those options there would be those on this board wondering why we dont have nicer eateries here or fancier condos and other buildings. We are lunchbucket or we are not.

I'll cheer these establishments on from a distance. I couldn't even spend $50 on a steak (or even a whole meal). I mean, I can financially... but I can't bring myself to spend that much on something so temporary. I'm even alarmed at what a Big Mac meal costs nowadays.
