Looking down Dalhousie Street, ByWard Market, Ottawa.

This was around 2022. Four (4) new towers now appear in that cluster on the upper, left. A fifth has started construction in that same general area, behind the heritage building with the arched windows (which will be part of the development).

Ottawa Today. The Byward Market in the foreground, with Parliament and Downtown center background, Downtown Gatineau right background.

Ottawa is sure getting denser, but man the buildings are so nondescript.

There's little creativity in the development world. One dominant, successful developer sets the precedence for all other future developers. I understand. So many skyscrapers in Canada are also gravestones for those brass balls.

Zibi. The Ottawa River is such a great feature of the NCR. Really happy we're getting such a great project on the waterfront.

Some areas are getting denser, but the highrises are still so so spread out. Ottawa-Gatineau is third only to Toronto and Vancouver in number of highrise buildings, but they are spread out in so many little pockets, and only a handful are over 100 metres. It makes for a pretty depressing urban environment in most places.

Ottawa is no doubt one of the "towers in the park" capitals of Canada. Though the older first suburban ring in Toronto is no slouch in this respect either. But things down there are densifying more rapidly around them than in Ottawa.

There are the ones with setbacks but the large footprint towers with long concrete frontages (sometimes with nothing, sometimes with dreary brown mini malls or shops) are not so great either.

The trend toward land assembly and squat towers that take up half or all of a block is not great. FWIW, if I were in charge of planning, I'd be more worried about building footprint planning than heights in a lot of cases. Whether a tower is slender or block-sized can make as much difference as whether it is 15 storeys or 30 storeys.

Around here it sometimes goes too far in the other direction with too many towers in an area all being uniformly thin and podiums being too low-slung.

I get your point. This part of Ottawa with these guys is not great either:

A few more from Harley613. The Rideau cluster is just one giant block.

There are a couple really weird street designs in the foreground of this picture. One where all the store fronts are set very far back for a couple blocks with a sudden obstruction to the excess width, and another with parking in the middle of the road…

So we know for sure that the new building will be taller than the old Fenwick tower pre-reno, but we don't know for sure about the new "Vuze beyond the claims of the new owner.

Either way, the new building is by far the tallest in that part of town which is almost 3km from the Vuze and doesn't have many highrises around it.

So it will be the tallest in the neighbourhood at least. Either way I didn't realize Halifax even had highrise nodes outside of downtown. Very cool.
