Wouldn’t that be verboten? It seems that you can’t make any new addition to a building look as if it actually belongs to that building. By using the same stone, they would have made it look harmonious – but worse still, they would have been recreating the look of older construction. That would have caused too much confusion as people would not have been able to tell which parts of the building were new and which were the original.
The look of all new construction MUST BE INCONSISTENT AND JARRING so that it stands out as being new.
[Or is it that way simply because architects these days don’t have the skills to create designs that can blend with and compliment existing buildings? It takes a whole other level of ability (and a lot more work) to get to thoroughly know a previous design and to work with that knowledge to create something that is compatible. It is a lot easier to just slap on a design that was made for some other purpose and claim that it contrasts by design.]
