Today’s departure count: 65, including 9 sun flights

Today’s cancellation count (so far): 0 - those PD flights that actually aren't operating at present are now removed

If they're announcing at this late date yul-ams service, they must of had spare planes lying around

Ottawa Airport cuts ties with Sunwing, Flair ground crews :

Quote:
Ongoing problems reached boiling point in the last week, says airport authority.

The Ottawa International Airport Authority (OIAA) says ground services for Sunwing and Flair have become so bad that it's ending its deal with the company they contract.

In a news release Wednesday, the authority said ground handling for the two airlines had become worse in recent weeks and "reached untenable levels in the past week" — which overlaps with the busy Quebec and Ontario March breaks.

Both airlines contract international airport services provider Menzies for ground marshalling and baggage handling, the authority said.

It said it gave Menzies 30 days notice Monday that it would be terminating its licence at the airport.

"The service levels passengers from both airlines have had to endure do not meet the customer experience threshold the OIAA is committed to facilitate," the authority wrote.

"We will continue to work with the airlines to ensure that their passengers enjoy smooth, efficient travel when flying to and from the Ottawa International Airport."

CBC/Radio-Canada has reached out to Menzies and both airlines for comment.
Does anyone know who WestJet contracts out of YOW for their ground handling services? Perhaps Swissport or Global Aviation Services?

Reminds me of the one and only time I took a flight with Flair out of YOW about 1.5 years ago. The person in front of me at check-in's last name was Menzies. The agent said something like, "Hey, we work for Menzies." The passenger said, "is that a good thing?" and the agent say, "No!"

The agent being so candid with a random passenger was surprising and very telling.

I arrived back into YOW around 15:30 yesterday, at the southeastern gates (26/28) and the terminal was quite busy! YOW felt like a major airport. Starbucks had a giant line, the pub was jammed, and lots of people just walking around. Obviously this was YOW's afternoon "rush hour", but it was a nice sight.

It is nice as a local when we can land at gates 14/15 and walk straight out the airport and to the carpark in 30 seconds. But having to walk the terminal to the exit and see all the foot traffic felt really good after all the loss of traffic from the pandemic.

Booked myself on Flair for the first time, YVR-YOW on 3/26. Price was $200 incl. seat selection and carry on vs. the $800+ that AC or WS wanted. Fingers crossed they're still solvent by then!

Above the wing WestJet has kept the major airports in-house, at least for now, but I don't know about below the wing at YOW. When they were here, Swoop used Maintair both ATW and BTW but they did not handle WJ. I don't think Global operates at YOW but I could be wrong.

Porter is in-house for ATW at YOW, but use Maintair BTW. It wouldn't shock me to see Flair and Sunwing switch to Maintair, they use them elsewhere already.

I know WS is focusing out east but if Flair goes down I could see WS adding YOW-LAS as part of the south/sun destination strategy.

Maybe, but I doubt it would be operated WS. Most likely it would be WO, but now that the Sunwing acquisition has been approved it could also be WG.

I could see Rouge trying to compete against it - but if Flair collapses then they'd go back to funneling through YUL/YYZ.

Sunwing has 'contingency plan' as Ottawa airport says it is cancelling licence of ground crew contractor
Ground work — including aircraft marshalling and baggage handling — is done by a third party, Menzies, for both Sunwing and Flair Airlines, according to the airport authority

Staff Reporter, Ottawa Citizen
Published Mar 15, 2023 • Last updated 1 hour ago • 2 minute read

Sunwing Airlines says it has come up with a plan following the Ottawa airport’s decision to revoke the operating licence of the company that takes care of ground-handling work for both Sunwing and Flair Airlines.

The airport authority said on Wednesday that the decision to sever the licence was made after a “degradation of service levels” was noticed related to ground-handling activities in recent weeks. That work — including aircraft marshalling and baggage handling — is done for both airlines by a third party, Menzies, according to the airport authority.

Sunwing has “contingency plans to maintain normal operations and mitigate the impact to our customers,” the company said in an unattributed statement to this newspaper Thursday.

The plan is to have the company’s “airport services management team on site working with various stakeholders at the airport,” it stated, without further elaboration.

The airport authority said Wednesday that it gave Menzies a 30-day notice that its operating licence would be cut off after previous written warnings because “the issues reached untenable levels in the past week.

“The service levels passengers from both airlines have had to endure do not meet the customer experience threshold the (airport authority) is committed to facilitate,” it stated.

Flair said in an unattributed statement sent by email Wednesday that the severing of the Menzies licence will have “no impact” on its operations. The airline offered no further clarification.

“We work closely in cooperation with our airport partners and will continue to provide low-fare flying from Ottawa,” the company said.

This newspaper has also reached out to Menzies for comment.

FlyYOW vice-president and spokesperson Krista Kealey explained that Menzies needs to have a licence to be able to operate at the airport, which is what the authority is cancelling. The airport cannot cancel contracts Menzies has with other parties, such as the airlines.

Meanwhile, Flair Airlines has filed a $50-million lawsuit against several plane-leasing companies over the “unlawful” seizure of four of its aircraft over the weekend.

The filings in Ontario Superior Court state that a trio of leasing firms found a better deal for the Boeing 737 Maxes with a third party and then “set Flair up” for default, amounting to an illegal termination of leases.

“The seizures were orchestrated in a bad faith and malicious manner that inflicted the maximum possible harm on Flair, including by interfering with its passenger relationships and trust,” the statement of claim reads.

“The lessors sent agents to seize the aircraft in the middle of the night as passengers were boarding planes for spring break vacations.”

Flair said it received no notice, precluding the discount carrier from alerting or rebooking customers. The agents arrived at airports in Toronto, Edmonton and Waterloo, Ont., at 3 a.m. EDT to confiscate the registration certificates and technical logs on board — the aviation equivalent of taking the car keys — the company said.

None of the allegations in Flair’s lawsuit have been tested in court.

So far they (AC and by Extension Rouge) seem to ignore Flair in Ottawa. Toronto has full blown price war on their routes but they seem fine to as above charge 4X on flights to Vancouver. Same for all their routes really.

If AC are still generating enough traffic in low season to warrant a 787 on YOW-YVR, I guess they don't need to respond in-kind.

Today’s departure count: 63, including 7 sun flights

Today’s cancellation count (so far): 4 - but 2 of those are PD flights that actually aren't operating at present - while they were removed yesterday, they're back again today

Porter sent out an email today advertising the March launch of direct flights from YOW. The email concluded saying to “be on the lookout for even more non-stop announcements in the near future.”

Wonder if that’s a general statement, or specific for YOW? And, if the latter, what direct flights are coming down the pipe?

Once they figure out their issues with their new E295s, I could see YOW-YYC being added especially as AC is currently planning to fly the route 1x daily in the summer, with morning departures (WS will be 20x weekly though).

I'm sure they are also considering YYZ/YOW-YWG, although YYZ-YWG has lots of carriers on it.

Hopefully they can figure out their learning curves in time for peak Summer. It will be interesting to see what they do in Winter 2023-24 as they will have more frames and domestic demand will drop. This is when we could see their launch of FLL/MCO/MIA or the Caribbean.

Last month they listed direct flights from YOW to all three already served western cities: YEG, YYC, and YVR all beginning May 3rd. Either someone leaked it by accident or there’s some change of plans.

Considering they're only able to run one YOW-YYZ flight daily on their Embraers, I'm not overly confident they'll be able to get those flights up and running on May 3.

Isn't that more a case of nobody using that route so it's the first to be cut. There aren't that many useful connections and the timing and location of YTZ is preferable for those using Porter to Toronto.
