Speaking of Vancouver FC, anyone know how their new field is coming along? I assume it must be pretty well ready to go at this point?

I was at Langley Event Centre last spring and although I wasn't looking for it, I didn't notice any construction going on at the time. I assume that something like what they have planned can be cobbled together pretty quickly.

BTW Real Salt Lake has to be one of the dumbest team names in all of sports.

Of course, these are the same people who have a basketball team named the Utah Jazz.

The stadium in Langley is modular so it is being pre-fabbed off-site and then shipped in in pieces. I think it's supposed to be set up sometime in March.

The NBA had a phase where they didn't rename teams when they moved. Jazz, Pistons, Lakers, Grizzlies, Warriors, Hawks, Clippers, Kings all started out in other cities (or multiple prior cities) before settling in the current city with an old name.

The Supersonics moved to Oklahoma City and became the Thunder, and I think they are the only one of the current teams to move and immediately change their name. The Charlotte Hornets move to New Orleans and kept the Hornets name for over 10 years before renaming to the Pelicans and allowing Charlotte to reclaim the Hornets name. The Washington Wizards were the Bullets for well over 20 years after moving from Baltimore.

Out of all those relocations the only name that really worked out was the Detroit Pistons, worked out perfectly actually.

I wonder when Seattle will get another chance - maybe they will get an expansion team along with Vancouver.

The city opened up the Northlands Coliseum to the media for a final tour before its demolition, which won’t begin until at least 2025. The arena, which hasn’t been in use since its closure in 2017, is now home to mice and bats. Much of the useable furniture and memorabilia of value has already been removed, leaving behind plenty of debris and dust. The city says it will take about a year to get rid of everything that remains before the structure itself can come down. City council approved $35 million for its demolition during last year’s budget discussions.

^ It always chaps my ass to see piles of seats and other stuff at old arenas like the Coliseum headed to the landfill. I recall when CanadInns Stadium was for sale they were charging a pile for old seats and artificial turf fragments. Some people bought it, but most of it probably ended up in the dump... they didn't sell anywhere near as much as they could have with the high prices they were charging.

I don't get it, why not just charge a nominal amount (like $20 a pop) and let people haul it off? It's a public asset headed for the dump anyway.
