So how does something lie the Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey
Club fit into this?

These words are what Europeans use for all sports they are supporters of rugby, football teams ect the same way we are fans of said teams but for some reason North Americans borrow these European words for 1 particular sport. These IPA-quaiffing hipsters throw on thier granny scarves and cosplay Englishmen for the day. I would take the league more seriously if the game retained traditional north American fanfare. It's bizzare to watch them so desperately try to duplicate a culture from another continent .

I used to think like this too, but... I play rugby, and the chances are
high that you will be coached by someone from the UK or Australia. OR, if not, that your coach learned
their rugby from someone from there. Like half the clubs in Ontario were started by the Jones brothers from Wales (only slightly exaggerating). And then not just coaching, but also other club players are also going to be from those countries, and if you watch any rugby it's going to be from those countries.
All of that is to say that you do tend to... idk, "come by it honestly"? You learn these phrases and terms as you learn the game, and so you use them. Not exclusively, just as many people or probably more are still saying "field", but it's not a poser move to say "pitch" because, well, it is a pitch. And a field.
If anything, the reverse can be exceptionally annoying. Major League Rugby is entering its 6th season, and by far the majority of broadcasters are American - there's been 1 Aussie and 1 Brit out of about a dozen regular game callers. And they spend way, WAY too much time trying to put things into football terms "for the American audience". Phrases like "Malcolm is starting at flyhalf, that's like your rugby quarterback" have me screaming at the TV "shut the fuck up, everyone can figure that out from context", or at the very least you can be explanatory without making direct comparisons. "Malcom will
lead the attack from flyhalf" achieves the same thing

rant over...
The singing/chanting / scarf-wearing-in-July crowd still kinda annoys me though. Partly because all the songs are just copied from other places, and also they seem to be mostly based on puns that aren't funny the first time. I also don't appreciate being told to go to next song in the songbook like I'm in school Mass again

(my wife and I were briefly involved with the Barton St Battalion when Forge FC launched, but very quickly decided that even if soccer is better to watch than we realized, we wanted no part of the "supporters" crowd). Luckily either rugby isn't big enough to have that annoying copying, or more likely I'm far too much a part of it that I'm blind to it. I sure do love wearing old-school cotton rugby sweaters, maybe that's the equivalent of the scarves?
