If you remember, there were plans to expand the terminal back in 2008, because we'd had 3 years of solid growth and that was expected to continue. Back in May of 2008, Expressjet still had some of their branded operations, Viva Aerobus came to town, JetBlue doubled it's number of daily departures from 4 to 8, and some of the incumbent carriers added new destinations. The first half of the year we were up something like 10-12% Then shortly afterwards, fuel spiked, the economy tanked, housing prices increased, then fell, due to the subprime mortgage crisis, banks went into crisis. and our aviation traffic fell sharply. Then there was the whole swine flu scare and that didn't help Viva Aerobus any.

Does anyone know if the current plan to cover the bag claim, fill the gap west side, etc are part of the bigger plan to completely redo the terminal as was planned prior to covid?

They’re all broken up into separate projects. The baggage claim upgrades have already started. The west infill starts later this year.

This is going to be like SFO expansions and remodels in the 1980s and 90s. It was never-ending construction from one end of the three connected terminals to the other end. A continuous work in progress. I guess it is that way for a lot of airports actually.

They are separate. I would anticipate mid to late 30's for the terminal project to get going and by that time who knows what it will look like.

The new concourse build can't begin construction until the completion of the new taxiways. According the the most recent timeline the taxiway construction is scheduled to be completed Q3 of 2026. Hopefully the new concourse will be operational by 2030.

Interesting nugget...

Austin-Bergstrom processed more passengers per gate than Atlanta-Hartsfield Jackson (ATL) in 2022. In fact, this past year, Austin processed more passengers per gate than ATL's best year (2019).

How much more efficient with gates can we be?

Generally, there has to be an upper limit to our capacity at some point. Surely we're approaching that ceiling by now . . .

Rumor has it that SWA will increase from 105 to 150 per day late spring/early summer. Supposedly they are trying to get one or two of the AAL gates. I think the only way this happens is if they finish gate 13 (bus gate) and make Spirit start using it. Maybe then there would be enough room for AAL to keep the same number of gates and SWA to grab an extra one or two.

I just thought it was interesting that AUS was busier (passengers per gate) than the busiest airport on the planet. I'm sure other airports may be in the same boat...but...anyway...there it is.

It is my understanding AUS surpassed its current passenger design capacity in 2019 (15 million). But, I'm not sure where a ceiling may be... Good question.

There honestly may not be a formal end cap. Just . . . cramming more and more people into Barbara Jordan, and diminishing service and physical plant returns.

The airport is working as fast as humanly possible to add gates! It's only going to take 3 years to add 3 more gates to the west end. Those 3 gates are currently scheduled to come on-line Q1 of 2026.

I think this is interesting and did some math. ATL has about 490,000 pax per gate per year and AUS has about 875,000 pax last year per gate. Also LAX has about 452,000 pax per gate last year. Also LAX is always under construction like hopefully AUS will be.
