Yes this is the 1st time for WestJet, that Calgary YYC has had a nonstop with few times weekly flights to Washington DC IAD & Detroit DTW.

Basically WestJet added 6 new routes this S23 that WS haven’t previously operated from YYC yet . They’re Barcelona BCN, Edinburgh EDI, Tokyo NRT, Washington DC IAD , Detroit DTW, & Moncton YQM.

The additions like YYC to Chicago ORD, Thunder Bay YQT & Austin AUS are resuming which WS previously severed a couple years ago.

All of that is literally already posted on the previous page. There was zero need to copy and paste that whole thing from Aeroroutes.

I think all these frequency increases for the summer (besides BOS) were done a while ago. All the actual frequency increases for S23 will be done in early March.

I think there was some expectation that WS would pull back a bit in YYC-YYZ with, on some days, 9 flights between Lynx, Flair and Porter. They did the opposite and are now 83-84 weekly. Peak YYC-YYZ days between 5 carriers is now 34 dailies. Jetlines is missing in action; if they decide they still exist as an entity that will make it 35. This is unmitigated insanity by any objective measure.

Sunday, July 30

AC 13x
WS 12x
Lynx 3x
Flair 3x
Porter 3x

YVR-YYZ that same day? Only 33 dailies. More total seats with AC's heavies, but this is just silly.

I think Jetlines is doing some charter work at the moment (helping Sunwing clean up their mess perhaps?). Flights on the Jetlines website appear bookable once again this spring.

Sometimes I wonder how this is even legal. Will the airline I booked a ticket on let me fly with them or will they go back to being a temporary wet lease charter carrier? Horrible

I have no idea how they were allowed to cancel scheduled flights into Calgary for a full 2 weeks and wet lease for Sunwing instead, and how that wasn't a big story. They're scam artists.

Calgary International Airport (YYC) hosted 14.5 million passengers in 2022, recouping 81 per cent of its pre-pandemic traffic, according to the Calgary Airport Authority (CAA).

“YYC is back to connecting people and cargo to places. We are thrilled by last year’s numbers for both our airports and expect to see close to 3 million more guests in 2023 at YYC,” said Rob Palmer, VP commercial, strategy and CFO. “We look forward for our industry to regain stability in the next few years.”

The CAA says in a statement that YYC is a major economic contributor to our province, as it handles 37 per cent of connecting flights in the country.

The authority adds YYC is also “one of the largest contributors to the regional GDP each year at an estimated $8 billion.”

Meanwhile, cargo plays an important role in generating revenue, as cargo freight levels are higher than those in 2019.

“In 2022, 5,362 aircraft filled with cargo landed at YYC Calgary International Airport. YYC can handle more cargo now and will capitalize on that opportunity through investments such as the west runway rehabilitation and sustainability improvements,” the statement reads.

YYC authority says it’s looking for extra funding from the provincial and federal governments to tackle the hike in operating costs since 2022.

The good news is complete recovery to pre-pandemic levels is in the forecast for this year, as the airport is expecting 17 to 18 million passengers.

The WS press release answers your question:

Quote:
"We are pleased to have WestJet begin operations at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. With the addition of WestJet, our customers will be able to fly directly from Detroit to Calgary for the first time since 2005.
Quote:
"Dulles International Airport welcomes WestJet to the Washington, D.C., region with this first-ever service to Calgary,"

The airline industry is as messed up as the banking, insurance and realtor industry. You go on an airline website and you pick a flight for a certain day and time and an aircraft and price and you coordinate plans around that or with that in mind. The airline can cancel your flight, add a stop, move the flight, change aircraft, bump you, etc. The only repercussion for them? You get a refund and not necessarily in all circumstance. Basically, you are paying for something you hope you get. When you don't get it, you can complain but that complaint takes the route of Borat's flight from Kazakhstan to New York and then it's no guarantee that anyone will do anything about it.

Frankly i'm surprised that the people flying Flair from CUN to YYZ that had to make a landing in Florida got a refund, hotel and meal vouchers and two free future flights for free (yes I know insert joke that Flair won't be around for them to use it). I don't think AC or WS would have given that out.

Long story long. I'm not surprised with what is going on with Jetlines.

AC is not stagnant at YYC - they are cutting routes, slashing frequencies and capacity

Latest reduction is YOW down to one daily 220 (that surprises me) and YUL two of the four daily now on 220s. YYZ only one widebody per day in the summer scheds. YHZ down to one daily 220 as well
Porter Airlines plans to add Calgary YYC - Ottawa YOW sometime in May 2023? As it had YOW- YYC listed as 1 of the routes on its website for their new Embraer E195-E2 planes .

Eventually Porter will make up for the loss of Air Canada cutting the 2nd daily flight on YYC- YOW route in S23.

No, it doesn't make up for it, because Porter's product is quite inferior and they are a low cost carrier flying a regional jet on steroids.

You missed my point. You were saying AC was stagnant in YYC I said that’s not true. They are in full retreat. I don’t think you get it.

After Westjet’s latest round of increases the barriers to entry getting higher and higher. The LCC increases are chasing an even smaller portion of the pie as Westjet laps up even more of the YYC market.

Looks like WS is also strengthening the entire west in general. The big thing WS has going for it is the connecting opportunities as well as airline partnerships and codeshares.

It’s awful to see AC retrench so much but I suppose in a post COVID environment with WS expanding quite a bit at YYC there isn’t much of an option.

Besides more Cargo ability, how many more seats in a KLM 772 vs 789?

772 has about 25 seats more than 789 (294 vs 316).

The remark about Washington confuses me. I am sure in the mid to late 2000's UA ran a weekly Saturday route to IAD...
