The City's website says: "Streets will remove pavers along the west side of the street as “pre-work” to waterworks scope of work, leaving the east parking lane intact for traffic and buses.

Waterworks would then move in approx. 2nd week of February and complete water main installation."

I guess they'll remove the pavers since it was covered in asphalt.

my guess is they want to save those old granite pavers. would be a shame to loose them to waterworks construction.

The Homer Street Upgrade Project, proposed for the 300 and 400-blocks of Homer Street between Pender and Cordova Streets, is a multi-disciplinary project that includes signal and street light upgrades, implementation of green infrastructure, and water upgrades, as well as street and sidewalk rehabilitation that includes preservation and rehabilitation of historic pavement. This project provides the City an opportunity to sequence its work efficiently and deliver the best overall solution for the area. This project was originally initiated as a streets project, in response to reported safety concerns for bus travel along this section of road;

however, it has since been planned to incorporate improvements to other infrastructure through the coordination of the various design groups within the City engineering department.

In scoping this project, Engineering Services (the applicant) has identified the need to conserve the heritage value of the historic pavement (granite setts) that sit underneath the surface layer of asphalt

The project was initiated due to the declining condition of the current asphalt surface layer adversely impacting the safety of Translink buses descending this sloped section of Homer Street which is a designated high-capacity arterial roadway. Buses were reportedly skidding on the exposed granite setts. Engineering Services is proposing a program of upgrades to Homer Street within these two blocks, in order to maintain its current multimodal use, particularly that of a Translink bus route.

Full scope (roadway wise):

The proposed heritage rehabilitation strategy entails the careful removal of the current asphalt surface layer and salvage of extant granite setts. The granite setts are to be reinstalled in the east curb lane (with the exception of an existing bus stop), which primarily serves as parking and loading zones. The boulevard on the west side of the road will be extended outwards, resulting in two traffic lanes, both of which will be paved with a surface layer of asphalt. Excess salvaged granite setts are planned to be kept within their original context through their installation as paving strips on both the west and east boulevards; lane crossings; and crosswalk lines in the Hastings and Cordova Street intersections.

Granville Loops

Some lane and street closures and detours will be in effect to facilitate construction. When required, vehicles will be detoured to the Howe Street and Seymour Street ramps.

Winter 2023 – east loop closure
Spring 2023 – west loop closure
Summer 2023 to fall 2023 – temporary Granville Street closure (refer to map below for detour)
Spring 2024 – opening of new downtown street network

Starting in February 2023, work on the first phase of the Granville Connector will begin, starting on the north end of the bridge.

New West-Coquitlam Bailey Bridge repairs set to wrap up next week

...Kwaku Agyare-Manu, the city’s senior manager of engineering services, said construction started on Jan. 23 and will be completed by Feb. 13. While the work is underway, single-lane alternating traffic is taking place on the bridge that remains open.

“We are replacing the wood decking on the Bailey Bridge,” he said in an email to the Record. “The wood decking was approaching end of life and needed to be replaced.”

A worker at the site asked the Record to remind motorists to avoid blocking driveways along the stretch of road, while waiting to cross the bridge, as it makes it challenging for large trucks to turn.

Located in the Braid industrial area, the twinned Bailey Bridge is the route many New Westminster residents take to get to businesses on United Boulevard, including the United Boulevard Recycling and Waste Centre.

Two side-by-side Bailey Bridges opened at the site in the spring of 2015. That came after the single-lane bridge that had been built at that location in 1994 was closed to vehicles in March 2014, when it was deemed to be structurally unsafe.

The twinning of the Bailey Bridge came after years of disputes between the cities of New Westminster and Coquitlam, which included provincial arbitration and a court case between the two cities. New West supported the retention of a single-lane crossing when the aging bridge was replaced, but Coquitlam pressed for a two-lane bridge – with a provincial arbitrator siding with Coquitlam in mid-2014.

The City of New Westminster’s main concern with a two-lane crossing was that a second lane would encourage more traffic to travel through the area and would create safety issues if vehicle traffic backed up next to the busy railway corridor.

When the original single-lane crossing was replaced, New Westminster picked up the bill for the first crossing, which was about $600,000. New West and Coquitlam split the cost of the second $1.2-million crossing.

At the time the twinned bridges were built in 2015, the city’s project manager told the Record that the new structures would be built to today's standards, which are a bit higher than those of the former bridge.

Does anyone know if something is happening in Burnaby along Hwy 1? They've been clearing out the south side between Willingdon and Kensington area, all the bushes and many trees have been cleared out in the field/dead area where Willingdon joins Hwy 1, it's quite open and you can see the traffic much better. And as you go east many trees have been clear-cut or thinned out closer to the highway.

Are they just doing a cleanup or some other project happening?

Probably just clearing what's encroaching towards the highway, I also noticed some cleaning around the Grandview interchange. If it was east of Kensington it could be for the pedestrian overpass but there's nothing happening west to Willingdon.

Were big trees actually removed or just bush clearing? Could be removing the older trees to be proactive, those deciduous trees only live 50-60 years. There's a lot of Himalayan Blackberry and English Ivy, invasive species, there as well.

They had planted trees around the interchange with the highway project but the blackberries found their way back.

Snow clearing seemed to be better in Vancouver last night.
I actually saw a snow plow on Granville St. at Georgia at about 10:00pm with just about an inch of slush on the road. They were being more diligent with the clearing - and Nelson and Smithe were clearer than the last snowfall.

The city roads were okay if you had AWD on Saturday night but Highway 1 was a disaster at midnight. I ran into major slush issues on the West end of the Port Mann bridge and had to pull over due to heavy snow and ice buildup jamming the linkages under my car. Most people had the common sense to stay off the highway but it was still a two hour drive to Sumas because it was just that bad. Ended up spending the night at the rest area. By the time I woke up around 7 though the highway was a lot better so they must of been aggressively clearing the highway before the morning but noted another six inches of snow had fallen.

Just out of curiosity what kind of vehicle did you drive?
