I thought we were supposed to get a big dump of rain but it hasn't happened... yet.
Some scattered showers on Monday morning in downtown Vancouver but the rest of the day was fine.
Tuesday could be when it hits. I've got my Gore-tex sneakers ready.

Monday's high at Vancouver Harbour was 8 C, the low was 6 C.

Could we send you some rain?

It's raining and right now in downtown Vancouver. Really heavy.
Hopefully this atmospheric river mostly runs its course in about 12 hours.

I understand people can do math and everybody knows Vancouver is milder. I just find the narratives are often out of step with the real differences, or often just basic stuff I see living here (it has been ultra dreary lately). I got a kick out of that "this is the time of year when we talk about how Vancouver never gets snow" comment a while back.
While I get what you have been saying (for a long time), I still think there is a tangible difference in winter time "feel" between SW BC and the milder parts of central-eastern Canada like SW Ontario and E and SW coastal NS. I am familiar with winter in all of them.

In SW BC colder winter weather feels like a momentary, temporary inconvenience. This is reflected in the vegetation, infrastructure and even lifestyle.

Whereas basically everywhere to the east including even Windsor, Halifax and Yarmouth, while its duration can be highly variable, it is rightfully treated as something that can and likely will settle in for a while.

I think that's a good summation, and the opinion that most people have by default.

I do think that weather patterns are changing, though, and that some of those impressions you mention from your past experiences might be starting to shift. As someone123 points out, data interpreted properly can be a clear indicator that things are changing, but peoples' impressions take longer to change. Changes in 'feel' can be quite nuanced and incremental, and thus not easy to describe in binary terms.

With most days in the forecast above 0 and as warm as 7C, I suspect the Rideau canal won’t be opening at all this season. That would be the first time this ever happens.

This is sad.
I thought the arctic temperature on Friday and Saturday would have helped.

We can't seem to keep snow on the ground in the Halifax area this year. After a cold weekend, temperature climbed up to +6 yesterday, melting most of the slight snow cover that we had achieved.

It cooled off through the night with some gusty northerly winds which brought the temp down to -5. Currently it's up to -1, but the winds are still quite brisk and cold. At least it's mostly sunny, so there's that.

The rest of the week looks like it will mostly be above the -1/-10 high/low normals. To copy the style of others in this thread, the highs for the next six days are:

0 4 2 7 -2 -5

Lows:
-5 -7 -6 -7 -2 -10

With some combination of sun/cloud/rain/snow along the way...

They want the ice to be 30 cm thick I think, to avoid any liability issues. I don’t it’s going to be realistic moving forward so they may have to review these standards.

Edit: it’s actually 30 cm

Hey McMinsen the blooming cherry blossom tree is apparently on Haro Street if you happen to be in that neighbourhood with a camera.

Has the NCC ever been sued from some skater falling through thin ice?

This week is supposed to be right around freezing. At this point in the season they have to be wondering if it is even worth it to open.

— for Winterlude.

Never heard of that happening.

You really only need 10-15 cm of ice to safely support a person, though there are heavier trucks and other equipment that need to go on the canal in order to maintain the rink.

A few days ago I saw one of those weather record tables and it pointed out that this past cold snap when the high was -13 or so was one of the top 10 coldest days going back to 1871. They had 3-4 entries from around 2003-2005 as well. I realized that I had an exaggerated sense of how frequent days like that really are. That cold snap period from the 2000's (and White Juan) sticks out to me, but it wasn't very common looking back through the 1870-2000 period.

I really don't think most people even in Halifax would guess that a day that only got up to -13 or so could end up in the top 10.

I have never said that the winter in NS and around here feel the same and don't think this. Mostly I make observations and it's other people who make arguments about which place is a hellhole, etc. I thought it was funny to go back and forth between the weather thread where people say -20 is unlivable hellhole territory while in the housing thread people tell you to move to Fort St. John. These arguments take on a life of their own in the different corners of the internet. This summer we will have the "heatwave Olympics" in here again while most real humans I know will complain about the heat.

On my side of my street, my neighbours cars hardly ever move. Almost every time I return home from anywhere I had to drive, the only two cars on my side of my block are the ones I then have to parallel park between. Today, though... they were obviously both out due to the most glorious evidence: the plow came by and cleared right up to the sidewalk in front of just our three homes NO SHOVELING. — YES lol More snow tonight too, and then more Friday (two storms en route), so it's timely.
