Is this real life? I figured indoor heat and the know how to use it was a requirement of anywhere not including the West Coast...

That pretty much sums up winter in Canada though. It's either mild and overcast or cold and sunny, generally anyway.
I was under the assumption with the mild winters Southern Ontario has that it would be overcast more than sunny…interesting to hear the grumblings of a lack of sunlight.

It’s tough living in the Okanagan Valley from November to March, sure the clouds help insulate the valley to create alright winter temps, but the dull colourless grey days does start to weigh on you come February!

Here's how I experienced the weather in Vancouver the past 30 days.
I'm always out in the afternoon, every day. Usually on the downtown peninsula or not too far out.

Others will have had different experiences, of course.
Especially if they don't get out much.

Just a steady mixed bag. The temperatures during this period ranged from 13.8 C to -2.3 C at Vancouver Harbour.

I think we're about due for a sunny day.
It's been a week now but the next couple of days look pretty wet in the forecast.

As long as it's dynamic and changeable. Far better than being locked into a solid month of gloom.

That is, seeing people react positively to weather that would fall on the below average scale for south coastal BC, but then instantly dismiss and speak negatively of even milder conditions as soon as those conditions are occurring in BC.

For example, people in Ontario / Eastern Canada have been overwhelming positive about the extremely mild winter they have been experiencing, but those monthly averages this winter would still rank as extremely below seasonal in Vancouver and Victoria and among some of the coldest months ever experienced in the area.

You even have some on here trying to weigh the -22 to -26 degree weather the other day seen in Halifax as on par with Vancouver’s extreme low of -13 in December… which I admit is still cold and sucks, but they are not the same. Also during that same cold snap Victoria did not go below -10. Coldest temps there ranged between -7 to -9 ish depending on location.

So it’s quite interesting to see.

Yes, I agree that the 3 and overcast in Southern Ontario is better than sunny and -20, but the current mainly cloud and 10 degrees in Victoria is better than the 3 and overcast in Ontario. In fact, So far this year Victoria has only had one day that has failed to reach that 3 degree benchmark (and that day was 2.8). But as soon as you mention that winter in Victoria / South Coastal BC is objectively better if your idea of a “win” in winter is overcast and 3, well, then all hell breaks loose…

PS, precipitation totals for this period in Victoria and Southern Ontario in general are in a near deadlock too at around 65mm.
For January the Victoria Gonzales weather station has a total of 26 mm of rain, in February thus far 2.6 mm of rain. The weather where most Victorians live is so much different from the airport because they don’t fully fall into the rain shadow caused by the American Olympic Mountains and the effect of the ocean is greater near downtown. The Great Blue Hole over Victoria (hmm..this could be taken wrong) is a real thing and explained here by the Weather Network.

I don’t even bother with the Environment Canada forecast - it’s never close. They were calling for clouds and rain all week last week, but we only had one day that was cloudy all day, just light periodic rain and all other days had some periods of sunshine if not sunny all day. That’s the thing, the weather will say cloudy, but there is usually sun poking through. Was a gorgeous and sunny later in the afternoon here in Victoria.

Oh I'm aware of that, I just use the airport because its easier and I know someone will look it up to fact check me and I'm tired of explaining the rain shadow around Victoria proper...

Yah, I hear ya! I know a lot of people say the weather can vary at different stations in their city, but here the airport is 25 km away from downtown and away from the main population centres. Might as well be a different city (well, it is, lol) and the weather conditions are really different. Heck even in Victoria the temperatures can easily vary by 10 C on a summer day across a relatively small area. The official temperatures will read 25 at the airport, but it’ll be 33 in Langford and 18 off Esquimalt or the breakwater. Even where I am, on the eastern edge of downtown, last summer I walked down to the breakwater to cool down because it was too hot, but when I got there I turned right around as there was a frigid wind coming off the ocean! Sometimes the temperature there is the same, but in the summer it can really vary.

Cloudy with showers.
It started raining when I went out and stopped just after I got back in.

Sunday's high at Vancouver Harbour was 8 C, the low was 6 C.

Looking quite mild for the next week and a half in SW Ontario, just a short cold front passing through next weekend.

Yep, February might turn out to be even milder than January.

It's been pretty mild this winter overall in the eastern end of the country as well. I saw a report that the mean January temperature for Shearwater was +1.5.

Looking at Shearwater Jetty, that station had a total of 20 hours so far this winter below that -13.5 degree mark seen at YVR.

I understand people can do math and everybody knows Vancouver is milder. I just find the narratives are often out of step with the real differences, or often just basic stuff I see living here (it has been ultra dreary lately). I got a kick out of that "this is the time of year when we talk about how Vancouver never gets snow" comment a while back.

Beautiful full moon shining over New Prussia tonight with clear skies. Calm and not too cold. A great night for stargazing.

It was a pleasant day to be out. The morning was a bit more brisk, with about -3C, but I was asleep for that. It warmed up to 1C, and the blue sky was a nice treat. I never saw the sun, but it was teasing us I suppose. I'm hoping for colder weather soon.

Hot diggity dog!

I broke off an icicle with my foot from my car's rear bumper that touched the ground today.

Suck it, Vancouver.
