As someone who dragged my hockey equipment on the metro twice a week for about 5 years, I can confirm that public transit can and will be done by some portion of arena users. And don't forget that lots of people go for public skates and lessons, and they don't need equipment.

For what it's worth, I have, on multiple occasions seen someone with a full hockey bag and stick on the LRT during the AM peak. Even then, there is plenty of space on the train.

I use the bus to bring my kids to/from hockey several times a year, and we play in Leitrim. We're in the minority, and it's not every time, but it's certainly possible. Hockey gear isn't that heavy.

And as for tournaments, if there was an arena near Bayview, I could see lots of players using the O-Train if their team is staying at a hotel along the line. Especially if the tournament fees include transit for the participants.

Player gear, especially kid gear, isn't heavy. My son is in U18 and is 6ft tall - his goalie bag is huge!

Agree with you on your last point - that would be a fun team outing.

I would love to see an animated waterfront at Lebreton. Why is Dow's Lake the only place someone who doesn't own a watercraft can rent one and explore in a city with this much water?!?

We could have a SUP/Kayak/Canoe/Peddleboat/MiniMotorBoat paradise with world class views. Bars and Restaurants along Piers and Docks. We NEED to have an animated waterfront somewhere, and Lebreton is THE place to do it.

Not very many people seem to know about the pumphouse and their activities either.

I wish they build a pool like in Copenhagen where you have piers on your map.
If you don't want to see people die diving off the Chief Commanda bridge that's what you build.

The pumphouse is amazing for the adventurer, but it's not a place for families and the general public to grab a paddleboat or a canoe for an hour and laze around.

Agreed - I guess I'm thinking combine it all into one concept. ie. It's all within walking distance as part of a 'Water District' in Ottawa. Do the fake beach like the 'berges de Sienne' in Paris. Do the water activities as you've suggested. Make it really easy/connected to enjoy walking around an interactive Zibi and light up the falls show at night again (MÌWÀTE). It's definitely do-able. Combined with everything, it's a great destination. Separate cycling pathways from pedestrian pathways. Maybe take advantage of Nepean Bay instead of new piers out into the river which would have to be removed annually. Investigate feasibility of kayaking right up to the Theatre de Isle on the Gatineau side and being able to leave your rented kayak there as you go for a bite to eat, watch a show, and explore that area. Just ideas.

Harley, I see what you're saying, but you'll need that separate pool that zzptichka is showing. Maybe something more like the Iceberg's club in Bondi Beach? Their pool is absolutely fantistic, including Australia's awesome water cycling/wave/tide action traditional pools, coupled with a fitness club, cafe and restaurant. Maybe we can do something similar with a permanent anchored concrete structure with natural river flows through the pool. I once lived in a van down by the beach at Bondi for a few weeks, and used the Icebergs to take hot showers for a $5 daily access fee. Swimming in the tidal pool at high tide with large, fall season waves was absolutely terrifying and fantastic. I recommend watching a youtube.

The current in the Ottawa River in the area you're showing is actually very strong near the middle and north sides of the river. I don't know much about the south side. If you allow 'families' to paddleboard out there, you'll need like a full-time rescue crew to pull people off of your safety netting, not to mention the trees and debris that the netting would pick up and require constant attention and repair.

That said, plenty of people take canoes and kayaks out amongst the small islands west of Lemieux. Its a fascinating place, but again with strong currents not for the novice.

We can swim in the river, but we need direct safety controls. I like the floating pool idea.

How to protect from the massive ice shoves that come in spring?

Come on, it would be hilarious entertainment seeing all the families being plucked off the safety netting from a waterfront patio!

One of the few things I liked about the DCDLS proposal.

At the very least, they need to build piers and have an active boardwalk along most (if not all) of the available Lebreton waterfront. It can be akin to Harbourfront in Toronto with paid mini-boat ferries that take you from Ontario to Quebec, piers, and boardwalks with shop stalls (that could be heated during the winter) akin to BeaverTails. It would immensely help the design of the area and provide something that Ottawa has but isn't maximizing, it's bountiful waterfront.

Somehow doubt that the NCC has that kind of vision. It's all greenspace and pawning off land. I'm not getting my hopes up on anything innovative (for Ottawa but is common place anywhere else in the world).

One of their mandates along that stretch of water is to protect the existing environment and its biodiversity. It doesn't seem that driving more people there and creating more infrastructure on the water would achieve that end.

Majority of the waterfront in the city is just greenspace. It's a small stretch that should be a designated area to visit and create proper frontage that's safe for general public and tourists to enjoy the waterfront. There's more than enough preserved around the whole city.

That entire shoreline is artificial.

Something else that's really fun is explaining the concept of river surfing to people who have never seen river surfers river surfing in the "surf" of the river.
