Homeless congregation at the library should be lower given its location. Interesting that Halifax doesn't have this problem. It's design is so open perhaps this is the reason?

They sure as heck were packed all the time when I was a university student about 12 years ago, and capacity issues are still a thing to this day from family members and friends who are still in university. If this creates more study spaces in a central location to both universities, students will go there.

The libraries are good, but the schools are jammed. And with how mobile students are now to watch lectures etc. it puts a lot of pressure on any quiet spaces on campus. Love how busy they are today compared to when I was in undergrad around 2000 (were quite dead).

I would love for it to continue being a homeless shelter, but with added social services. The current shelter system is far too tight location-wise. They could remove books and make bunks. I'm not being sarcastic or facetious in any way. The existing central library has been a defacto daytime shelter for 20+ years, might as well make it a 24/7 centre for the most vulnerable who have relied on it for years.

City has already sold the building for redevelopment. It will close once the new library opens. The City might explore a new branch library Downtown/Centretown, possibly at City Hall.

Huh? I worked at Lyon and Laurier for most of the last decade, and lived at Lyon and Laurier for years in the previous decade. I'm supremely qualified to comment on this. There are some social housing developments west of Lyon, but I can't recall ever seeing any group of unhoused people in the area.

Actually, there is a not insignificant unhoused population running the length of Somerset/Wellington from Lyon (Dundonald Park) to Parkdale just a few blocks south of Laurier as well as others living just off (or even on) the various pathways surrounding Lebreton flats to the north-west and Centretown West to the south-west.

I'd say the Escarpment District is not well frequented by the homeless population, other than the Garden of the Provinces and the bus shelters outside of Lyon Station (though not as much since the STO routes were re-routed).

I have been referring to DOWNTOWN west of Lyon, not Centretown, and I should have made that more clear.

Even so, the vast majority of the people they're referring to at Dundonald and on Somerset live in social housing and are not 'homeless'. Surely more today than when I lived there.

Progress continues on the Ādisōke project site. The contractor recently completed all steel and concrete work to support the P1 and P2 levels of the underground parking garage. The ramp connecting P1 to P2 has also been constructed. Commencement of the main floor of the library is now underway.

February 15, 2023
The main floor of the facility continues to take shape. The P1 slab is now complete with its last concrete pour. Electrical wiring and mechanical plumbing rough-in have commenced on the P1 and P2 level. In the coming days, the L1 suspended concrete slabs will be formed and poured. Backfilling and waterproofing operations are continuing around the perimeter of the building. The installation of site services, such as the watermain, sanitary and storm sewer lines, are also ongoing.

I just hope this turns out at least as 'ok' as the renders. I know it won't be a landmark like the Calgary/Halifax/Vancouver main branches, but I'm so afraid it will skew towards Edmonton if the building materials do that thing that building materials in Ottawa tend to do between render and build.

I'm pretty confident this won't be an Edmonton type disaster. Diamond and Schmitt have good track record here in Ottawa of delivering quality projects with nice materials. My one complaint on any of their projects is the east side addition to old Union. It makes it look like the Rideau face of Union suffered a facadectomy, when it's not (for once).
