People opinions on the design seem pretty mixed. This is no Calgary Central Library, but I'd still call it a step-up from what we can usually expect out of Ottawa.

It looks like it will be bright and functional. It won't be a tourist attraction architecturally like Halifax Library for example but looks like it will do the job.

I got to ask, why does everyone rave about the Halifax Library. It's nice, but I don't think it's anything spectacular. I'd say it's a step below Ottawa's u/c library (keeping in mind that they have less than half the population).

Have you been in it? The exterior in Halifax might not be groundbreaking but the overall experience is very good. It won the GG award for architecture on this basis.

I think the jury is out on Ottawa's. It might also end up being a great space.

The design has grown on me a lot, but something that has always bothered me is the vertical columns - I remember they justified them as indicators of where the entrances are but I don't really buy it. They really break up the concept and take away from the design imo. Here's a quick photoshop without them:

^^^ Had they made them one large column that split into a Y that echoed the structures in the top floor it might have looked nicer.

Not a masterpiece. But not entirely banal either. A very Ottawa building designed to age inoccuously and fade rather than to make an overly ambitious architectural statement in 2022/26 that ends up looking cliche and dated by 2032.

Having kept an eye on the Vancouver public library back in the day and how it was modelled after the Rome Colliseum, it was a modern architectural masterpiece. But when I visited it for my first time, it ended up being a place for the homeless and unfortunate to shoot up on drugs.

Ottawa's urban planning has been built around the car and suburban communities. Does anyone really think the an Ottawa citizen will trek from the suburbs to visit this library?

Not if you look at a map and realize its the other side of downtown. Are people looking to shoot up going to take the lrt?

Students alone will account for a lot of the library traffic considering its 10-15 minutes on on transit from either campus.

Students are going to the public library on transit? Are the Carleton and U of O libraries that bad?

Libraries are fine just undersized for the size of the student pop if it has nice views and cafes students will go with their laptop especially given that so many are going to have transit passes already.
