Its because of how many flights are available. Toronto to Calgary/Vancouver/Montreal are basically every 60-90 minutes so if you are coming in from Moncton or Saint John you don't have long waits to connect.

Porter will likely make it easy in Ottawa but will take a while until they can build it up.

Heck porter out of Billy Bishop 13 flights tomorrow to New York. Makes connecting and planning much easier.

I'm happy to be wrong!

Though I dunno if I was that wrong. Launching service from YOW to those cities was always expected. I never said they wouldn't launch/add services here. What I suggested was that they seem to be prioritizing YYZ as a hub over Ottawa. And even with this announcement for YOW that still seems to be the case.

Yes of course frequency is everything here, but I was more thinking along the lines of if they time it well. Higher frequency airports have the advantage of putting you on the next flight out if there is an interruption with that next flight not being too long of a wait. But again, if they time it well with let’s say an hour layover, then I still would choose YOW over YYZ/YUL. Personal preference to use not so big airports on my part.

Flying to EWR on a Dash 8 sounds like a dream. I have flown there on an ERJ145 dozens of times and I HATE IT.

I have no illusions that long-term YOW won't be bigger than YYZ. However, with the announcements over the past week, they're well on their way to hitting that 60-70 daily YOW departures mark within 5 years that I'd mentioned a couple of months ago. At the very least this summer they'll be at:
-YYZ 4x
-YHZ 3x
-YTZ 11x
-YQM 1x
-YFC 1x
-YQB 1x
-BOX 1x
-EWR 2x
-YQT 2x

That takes them to 26x without any additional announcements...which I think there will be at least one more, even if it's just to up YYZ to 6-7x by summer. 26x on weekdays is already the most daily YOW departures they've ever had. Pre-pandemic in their peak seasons they'd top out at 22-23x.

Because Toronto YYZ & Montreal YUL have more flight options from different Airlines to connect to Domestic, US & International destinations .

Similar amount of non-stop destinations that Air Canada will have! Wild.

AC will have YVR, YYC, YWG, YYZ, YTZ, YUL, YHZ, EWR, DCA, and YQB (scheduled to resume May 2023)

Anyone else find it extremely satisfying to put all the routes into perspective with their route map? YOW is starting to feel like a real hub if only a slightly minor one right now.

Also, YYZ-YYC starting Feb 21 as a new route. They’re ramping up much quicker than I expected.

Embraer E195-E2 and E190-E2 Receives Type Certification in Canada

Quote:
Embraer’s E2 family of commercial jets, the E195-E2 and E190-E2, has received Type Certification from Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA), following certification from ANAC (Brazil), the FAA (USA), and EASA (Europe) in 2019 and 2018 respectively.

The delivery of the first of fifty E195-E2 ordered by Toronto based Porter Airlines, which will also be the first E195-E2 to operate in North America, will take place at Embraer’s headquarters in São José dos Campos, Brazil, in the coming days.

Porter Airlines has orders with Embraer for up to 100 E195-E2 aircraft; 50 firm commitments and 50 purchase rights. In 2021 Porter ordered 30 Embraer E195-E2 jets, with purchase rights for a further 50 aircraft, worth US$5.82 billion at list price, with all options exercised. A firm order for a further 20 aircraft followed in 2022, valued at US$1.56 billion

Looks like the interactive part of the map isn't working at the moment. I see MYR and Muskoka are absent from the map. I wonder if that means they're dropped out of YTZ? Tremblant is still there as a seasonal destination.

Today's departure count: 61 - including 3 sun flights

Today's cancellation count (so far): 4 - looks like the storm is already starting to affect YYZ & YTZ. While it's currently raining in Toronto, it's expected to turn to heavy wet snow shortly, so these are probably pre-emptive cancellations to maintain schedule integrity as best as possible. Should be a mess here tomorrow!

Rouge 1511 from YYZ to YQT (Thunder Bay) flew all the way to YQT before not being able to land and flew to YOW! What a ride! Wonder if the folks get bonus Aeroplan points for that one!

I think Muskoka Myrtle beach were both dropped, they haven't been bookable for a while now.

With regard to Porter I fully expect a YYT service from YOW sometime next summer.

Always great to see a new route start up. Seems like YOW is getting a little bit of attention these days except from AC or WS - unsurprisingly. Speaking of which, I wonder what AC will do (if anything at all) about this Porter initiating YOW-BOS thing or about Porter's regional expansion in general.

It was a missing route recently with some business travel and higher end leisure. If history is any guide Air Canada will respond. Thunder Bay seems safer and they can steal connections from there if BOS or NYC are big destinations. It's always easy to criticize from the cheap seats but they don't seem to have added much and splitting their fleet in Toronto seems like they lose their biggest advantage that is especially valuable with infrequent YYZ-YOW flights right now from AC.

Good point. Time will tell if AC retracts their Summer 2023 schedule plans to increase frequency and possibly return the YOW-BOS route.
