It all depends on where and how they want to grow their network. If they want to run E195s direct to YYZ from YHZ/YQM/YFC, they could use those to feed YEG/YYC anyway. Ultimately, it would make sense to grow both YOW and YYZ as hubs so that the rest of the network has more options while still letting Porter serve the Ottawa and Toronto markets directly.

The disappointing part in all of this is that Porter is still prioritizing YYZ over YOW.
Not surprised Porter Airlines is prioritizing Toronto YYZ over Ottawa YOW. As YYZ is much larger market compared to YOW & its best way to fill up planes for most Airlines in Canada!!
From Air Canada, WestJet, Lynx, Swoop, Flair, Air Transat & Canada Jetlines also using YYZ as its hubs/bases is a great example of it.

Also Toronto YYZ is most people's connecting point in Eastern Canada compared to YOW too.

I meant would they send the Q in the short term before they received E95 frames to feed the YYZ flights. My example shifted a daily YHZ-YTZ to YYZ.

Lot's of O&D at YYZ and I am sure some people will use the connection service from YOW/YUL and take the YVR & YEG flights especially because the connection time is not long (75-95 mins).

Makes sense to start out of YYZ first. YOW will come (hopefully by the summer)

Porter is adding some routes to YOW.

received this in an email from Porter this morning.
Starting March 27th, 2023, we will begin flying new non-stop routes from Ottawa to more destinations. No more flight connections when you travel to New York, Boston, Quebec City or Thunder Bay!

Lots of new destinations are coming, so keep watching your inbox for more announcements!

This is so fantastic!!!! Could this be the beginning of Porter meaningfully connecting passengers in YOW for the upcoming E2 routes? More connections with the Dash-8's from other cities was one thing I was hoping for from them, and it looks like it's coming true.

"Ottawa was our first destination when we launched in 2006, and it has always been a critical location for Porter throughout our history," said Michael Deluce, president and CEO, Porter Airlines. "The network expansion in Ottawa shows our commitment to the Ottawa-Gatineau region and its people. We expect our presence in Ottawa will continue growing."

EWR looks like 2x daily (am and pm departures)
BOS looks like 1x daily (pm departure)
YQB looks like 1x daily (pm departure)
YQT looks like 2x daily (am and pm departures)

So it appears EWR will have some healthy frequencies between AC, UA and PD. Too bad AC or DL won't return to LGA. I wonder if MDW could be next for PD from YOW or IAD on the transborder front?

I think the purpose of these new routes are connections for the upcoming E2 (hopefully), so I don't think they will do MDW because they may be trying to connect Eastern cities going Westbound. Thunder Bay is an exception because they don't have much options to begin with. MDW is too much of a backtrack. I hope I'm wrong though. Would love to see a direct to MDW with Porter, I would for sure be using that.

This is awesome! I kinda wish PD would swap LGA for EWR. Would love to see Porter go hard on city centre airports: LGA, MDW and DCA. Just run all their interlines through BOS.

I suspect having Porter semi-based here is going to be very good adding flight destinations.

As others have mentioned, definitely looks like they are setting it up for future connections.

YQT/YQB-YOW-BOS/EWR

BOS/EWR-YOW-Western Canada

Seems like a great idea that others eluded to during the summer speculation season.

I wonder if AC will bring back BOS on Jazz or if Porter announces a YOW-YEG on the E95 if AC will immediately bring that route back.

Looks like some of us are right. PD is expanding in the YOW market a lot earlier than expected though! great news.

I heard that Porter doesn't fly to LGA because LGA does not have facilities for CBP/immigration(YTZ does not have US preclearance). I guess it depends on which terminal Porter will fly out of at YOW whether LGA is even possible or not.

It's likely O&D passengers in Ottawa YOW to Boston BOS, Newark EWR, Quebec City YQB & Thunder Bay YQT that will make those Porter Airlines E2-195 successful or not for YOW.

As most connecting passengers in Eastern Canada are going to choose Toronto YYZ & Montreal YUL still!

Why would passengers choose to connect at YUL or YYZ? Pretty sure they would likely like to avoid connecting at those two airports if possible from a passenger perspective. It's not about passengers choosing, it's about airlines routing passengers.

This is my thinking as well. If I was from a small Maritime city, having YOW as a connecting option over YYZ and YUL is great. That’s just me though, as I much more prefer to avoid big airports.

Why would they choose this? They "choose" this now because that is what AC wants them to do. Feed the YUL/YYZ hubs.

EWR, BOS, and YQT are likely strong O&D destinations and Porter knows very well how many YOW folks were travelling on these flights via YTZ.

Sure you can fly YQT-YTZ-BOS/EWR right now, but with potential future expansion from YOW, Porter may route folks via YOW to Western Canadian cities because no one is going to fly USA-YTZ-taxi/UP-YYZ-Western Canada, and I don't think Porter is going to fly into YYZ from their current US destinations in the short term.

I don't see it for sale yet, but I'm sure EWR-YOW-YHZ on Porter will be something that they sell.

The best hub for Maritimers going to BOS, EWR and IAD is Halifax. It's the shortest routing. Second best distance wise is YUL. YOW adds another ~80nm (about 12 mins of travel time) above the substantial distance YUL adds. YOW makes the most sense for all destinations west. Trying to flow Maritime pax bound for BOS, EWR and IAD through YOW, YUL or YYZ, is basically creating at opening for somebody (most likely AC) to deploy a couple of Q400s in YHZ and own that market. PD would be wise to shift a half dozen Q400s to Halifax and do this themselves before AC ramps up Rouge in Halifax.

For once a post that didn't age well in favour of YOW with today's annoucement! At last some big news for the airport. BOS is back, YQB finally has some real competition and now there's suddenly two competitors to YQT after a decade without any.

The press release says it all: "The network expansion in Ottawa shows our commitment to the Ottawa-Gatineau region and its people. We expect our presence in Ottawa will continue growing."!
