Porter Airlines adds Calgary to its list of new destinations.

TORONTO, Dec. 15, 2022 /CNW/ - Porter Airlines is adding Calgary to its growing network, with flights between Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and Calgary International Airport (YYC). The route will be served with its state-of-the-art Embraer E195-E2 aircraft.

Porter is taking its award-winning service further into Alberta, as Calgary marks the airline's second destination in the province. Edmonton was previously announced this week. Travellers will enjoy an elevated economy travel experience at highly competitive fares. All passengers enjoy no middle seats, free, fast Wi-Fi, complimentary beer and wine served in real glassware, and premium snacks.

The initial flight schedule starts on February 22, 2023, with two daily round-trip flights:

From Toronto Pearson to:
Flights begin: Calgary (YYC)
Feb. 22, 2023
Average daily, non-stop,
round-trips: 2
Round-trip introductory
fares, including all taxes
and fees, start at: $262

"With Porter, Calgarians can now also enjoy a new level of generosity and thoughtful service that is non-existent today in economy air travel," said Kevin Jackson, executive vice president and chief commercial officer, Porter Airlines. "We are offering a higher level of economy service at highly competitive fares and are changing the way people think about economy air travel. Porter provides more value for your money than with any other airline."

"As the gateway for Western Canada, YYC is proud to facilitate yet another option that connects Calgary with more direct access to Toronto," said Rob Palmer, Vice President, Commercial, Strategy & Chief Financial Officer. "With Porter being the third new airline to connect its fleet to YYC Calgary International Airport in under a year, the airline's entrance into the Alberta region signals strength in the industry's confidence in our airport and region. We look forward to working with Porter to deliver elevated experiences for our guests and bringing more economic benefits to our communities."

In 2023 Calgary YYC has 5 different airlines adding new flight routes.

WestJet (3)
Lynx Air (3)
Flair (1)
Porter Airlines (1)
Canadian North (1)

9 total additional new routes announced on 5 different airlines so far.

While Air Canada at YYC has been stagnant/cutting some routes, the last several years.

There’s not much to say, it’s a codesharing agreement between WestJet and JAL. It’s good for WestJet passengers, though as they can transfer onto a JAL flight and go to another Asian destinations and their luggage will carry through making it much easier than getting your luggage and re-checking it again.

I’m surprised WestJet has codesharing with Air France only to a few destinations in Europe, is this is because they don’t want to create competition to some of the destinations they already fly directly to Rome, etc. ?

They codeshare to a bunch of places, but it's only new destinations listed.
The NRT flight arrives way too late for any connections onto JAL.

Here's the full list of AF codeshares bookable through WS.com:
https://www.westjettravelagents.com/news_article/air-france-codeshare-enhanced/

I'm more curious to see if JL adds its code to WS NRT flights.

Air Canada inflight entertainment has new features now. Good for Sports fans & the 1's that enjoys the news world wide✅!!

Air Canada has upped their game with exclusive new in-flight features.

With the holiday season upon us, thousands will be travelling across the country to see their loved ones. And if you’re someone who tends to get super bored on flights, we’ve got good news.

Thanks to Air Canada, flying just got a whole lot better — especially for sports fans. The airline has recently launched Live TV on select domestic flights, which means passengers will no longer miss out on exciting live-action sports games while in the air.

With six live channels in both English and French, passengers will also be able to keep up-to-date with live national news onboard.

TV programming consists of TSN 1, TSN 2, and RDS, which will deliver comprehensive live sports coverage for marquee sports events including soccer, hockey, basketball, football, baseball, and more; CTV News Channel for 24-hour worldwide breaking news; LCN, Quebec’s all-news station; and BNN Bloomberg for all things new in the business and finance world.

Not many flights by JAL after 8:00pm, passengers will have to wait until the morning. It's not the worst case situation however, your checked luggage is going through to the final dest on JAL, so passengers get to leave the airport and check out Tokyo for a night.

Edit: I did a quick Google run, and can see some of the numbers for 2022 YTD (up to October) for some airports

YYZ -
YVR - 13.77M (up to September)
YUL - 13.17M
YYC - 11.99M
YEG - 4.75M
YOW -
Once 2022 is finished and all the stats come out, it'll be a good time for comparison. So far in 2022, most of the airports are similar in standing to what they were in 2019.

Here's the traffic of the big 8 for 2019. The gap between YYC and YEG has widened. The gap between YUL and YVR has shrunk. YYC and YUL are roughly the same ratio as before covid. I don't know about the others.
YYZ 50,499,431
YVR 26,379,870
YUL 20,305,106
YYC 17,957,780
YEG 8,151,532
YOW 5,106,487
YWG 4,484,249
YHZ 4,188,443

Over the past 20 years the big 4 airports have trended up while others like YOW, and YWG, YHZ have flatlined. YEG has moved a bit, but not much better and IMO is potentially an airport that could stall out like the others.

What is it with all the bitter comments of the YEG threads on SSP and SRC, about YYC specifically? So much talk about AC's regional reductions at YYC causing the beginning of the end for YYC, and how the WS strategy of focusing on YYC is bound to miserably fail.

I mean it 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 to see AC reduce flights but WS (and others) will more than make up for it, no?

People on the internet take things personally and emotionally. Long term AC pulling out of Alberta the way it is, is bad for Alberta - And it doesn't matter if you are in Edmonton, Calgary, Grande Praire or Fort Mac. The connections help the entire province, tax revenue, spread some jobs and facilitate lower prices with competition.
Edmonton, since it is a similar population as Calgary probably never thought it was fair that Calgary had AC Alberta HUB.

And unfortunately, AC did almost completely gut YEG regional pretty recently as well so it's not like YEG is getting extra service either.

I'm a bit skeptical about Flair's YYC-YXE route next summer though.

Westjet is simply muscling AC out of YYC, they are adding a ton of capacity while AC is cutting, but I'm sure it's mostly a wash or gain overall. Before Encor, Link, and the wide body fleet, AC had some markets covered that WS wouldn't/couldn't have flown at the time. Now that WS has planes ranging from 30 seat Beechcraft to 320 seat Dreamliners, it's a totally different story, they can slaughter AC on every route possible. The regional flying carnage is crazy, they just handed the keys to WS and said "you keep it". Even if all we're talking here are smaller capacity Dash 8s with low frequency, it's still significant for them to pull out of so many markets have have skeleton flights to the remaining. YYJ, YQR, and YXE are the biggest shocks, those were the largest of the Jazz routes (other than YEG maybe). To axe them entirely is just pure surrender, no way around it. I will be curious next summer what % of seats are on WS, it's got to be close to fortress hub territory if not already. I wonder if Air Canada will quietly remove mention of YYC being a hub from any literature? They already never mention it in press releases, but I think it still exists on some documentation? Maybe because they still operate FRA and LHR it's still considered a hub? But under no other definition can it still be called that for AC.

Doesn't help that Calfan12 keeps going in there and talking only about Calgary.

Jazz operation is a disaster at YYC as they're massively short both planes and crews. The verbiage AC uses to refer to YYC is meaningless, as is whether or not "fortress" status has been achieved by WS - I'd argue they achieved that ages ago.

You're right that it's bleak, but when Jazz pulls it together we'll have to see if anything comes back. Until then I'm not quite going to say "full surrender" or whatever else.

WS has made some domestic additions in February/March/April. YXE goes up to 9x daily on days 1345 and YKA goes up to 4x daily on days 1567 (so far just Feb/March)

Fortress hub territory for sure.

WS resumed PUJ / KOA this weekend. I believe that's all the winter seasonal routes now.

Additionally AA has pushed back ORD to June 1 (originally resuming May 4).
