So, you no longer can get from the station to the mall?

Zero chance Edmonton will build an LRT line to the Edmonton International Airport. It's rural land for 10km from the southern most built up area to the airport. It would not be economically viable, as very few people would use the 10km stretch.

Relative to urban lines it would be quite a bit more economical to build, it could be at surface and single tracked. Relatively few stations between the airport and Edmonton.

Then my only hope would be to tunnel to downtown a link to the existing rail infrastructure.

Not on an overhead walkway - not for the past six years.

You go down to grade on an escalator, cross the street, and enter the mall on the lower level.

That is stupid.
Why did they do that?

It isn't and should not be a priority until the rest of the city-wide/regional system is up and running to help feed it, but I could see it happening around 25yrs from now.

An enclosed pedway from the West Ed station to the Mall would be on Mall property and about 1 city block long. And the entrance there is at-grade under a parkade ramp if I remember - so you'd have to get the Mall to agree to all kinds of pricey stuff.

The connection is actually a straight shot through the parkade and isn't as bad as one thinks. It's usually pretty busy *with pedestrians* and used to use it daily and didn't notice any issues with cars there.

Cities and malls have worked well together in the past when it comes to transit. In Ottawa, St. Laurent expanded to include a direct connection to the underground station, Rideau has three entrances to the subway station, Place d'Orleans and Billings have an overhead walkways, Bayshore has an overhead walkway to its parking garage, which connect to the mall (not great, but it's something), Gloucester Centre has a crosswalk to the station plaza. I'm sure I'm missing some.

Surely, Edmonton and WEM could have come up with some sort of agreement, even if it was a sidewalk.

EDIT: I see that parking garage now, thanks. Do they have a sidewalk under tehre from the station t the door?

No just regular parkade pavement at grade so you walk from the station to mall entrance in the drive aisle as if you just parked your car

Also at our Southgate Station the mall there, if I recall, refused to play ball for a direct connection when it was built

^that's correct; didn't want to provide any of their lot for park and ride.

There is a rumour that a mixed use tower is planned to be built on the parking lot between the LRT station and West Edmonton Mall connecting them together.
