Who says an airport link has to go through downtown?

There has been much bemoaning about the fact that Ottawa's will not. Go into the Confederation Line thread and go back a few years....

If Edmonton did just use what they could to get an airport link, it would be better than nothing.

I'm not from Ottawa (however I have rode the O-train) and I just don't see how organizing the lines that way makes sense...

Considering lines 1 and 3 follow the exact same path with the exception of all stations after Lincoln Fields, why not make it one branched line with two termini in the west?

And that same branched desgin can be applied to lines 2 and 4. It could dramatically reduce the amount of transfers people may need to do and just increase the fluidity of the system altogether.

I am guessing it is due to the demand on that section. It may be possible that with Stage 2 finishing, they may do that with the new terminus.

The northern segment of line 2 will still be single-tracked with passing loops, so might be hard to handle the frequency with the combined line 2 and 4 service.

I thought it is all double track.

But having 4 lines makes it seem like we have an expansive system.

I agree, though, should have been Line 1 A and B or at least reorganize the numbers so that Confed was 1 and 2 and Trillium was 3 an 4.

Yup. So they doubled tracked most of the south extension, so the three rural stations will all be fairly expansive, double platforms for the couple people who use it at rush hour, while the busier north section will have a mix or single platform (like Dow's with major TOD, student housing and soon the largest hospital in the region) and double platforms (Carleton University with bus shelters).

I wonder how much of it is also the history of the different Transitway routes.

I don't think it's in any plan anywhere, but the transit fantasy part of me wants the SE Transitway to be converted so that Line 3 can branch off at Hurdman and continue to the airport, and Line 2 can serve Limebank.

Exciting times with the West Edmonton Mall station taking shape only 40 years late.

I’d rather a line three that hits Heron/Baseline and follows it West across the river myself. There’s a lot of demand there between Carleton and Algonquin, and the buses are not enough.

Can you give some clarity of where this is?
What street is this?
Which direction are we looking towards?

Passing on the south side of WEM?

Will the station be integrated into the mall like Metrotown in Burnaby?

Not sure about Metrotown, but the Valley Line will begin its elevation past 182 st NW, then stop in front of the WEM. From there, it will have a station at the Misericordia Hospital, which will be elevated, so as to not impede emergency vehicles (ambulances, etc).

From there, it will angle down to at-grade level past 165 St NW. IN total, if I am not mistaken, there will be about 45 piers supporting the elevated rail line.

The SE Transitway will never reach capacity. Better to invest that money into new rapid transit lines.

To be clear, by "transit fantasy part of me", I mean the part that is mostly divorced from reality and entertains notions such as building entirely new rapid transit lines from mild operational considerations and the mild satisfaction of making a bunch of lines on paper look better.

This is what Metrotown looks like.

The metrotown connection was removed when the station was rebuilt. There's an empty walkway boarded up that leads to nowhere now
