*Sighs..* I know, it would be nice for hamilton to have a sense of civic pride again though.. it was sad going through gore park and almost the entire southern area is boarded up or unusable, and the other side is a hodgepodge - we need that whole core to become the happening place to be again. We've replaced china, jewelry, furs department stores and cigar stores with cash mart, cheapie stores, methadone clinics fast food joints and abandoned or empty units.. and I get it - progress comes in time, but it's hard to watch it creep along..
When we really reflect on the city - we sabotaged our own downtown ourselves as a city. Granted malls and suburbanization and the belly up of eatons didn't help but we let bad things take their place, and others were left to rot. I went through the city center yesterday - it was eerie, with the pending demolition final sales are everywhere inside - very much felt like eatons final day, but on a much less quality standard - took some time to have some last minute looks at the ceiling and atrium before I mentally said farewell to it.
