Whatever happened to MOST of the festivals and parades in the downtown core? I did some research and apparently canada gaining its independence is a result of lot of that ending - a lot of the stuff was more british themed - with flags and ticker tape parades.. I'd love to see parades in the core again.. with people hanging out windows..

They even had a tank!

Good idea, hopefully they could even rotate it 45 degrees towards James that might be the best angle for both directions. Fun fact, that's actually the second Medical Arts sign. The first sign was actually for sale via Smash Salvage earlier this year.

I never thought I would read something like this about Hamilton, haha.

I've been here since 2004, and the only new thing built in downtown Hamilton was a new federal building on Bay St; whoopie doo!

*Sighs..* I know, it would be nice for hamilton to have a sense of civic pride again though.. it was sad going through gore park and almost the entire southern area is boarded up or unusable, and the other side is a hodgepodge - we need that whole core to become the happening place to be again. We've replaced china, jewelry, furs department stores and cigar stores with cash mart, cheapie stores, methadone clinics fast food joints and abandoned or empty units.. and I get it - progress comes in time, but it's hard to watch it creep along..

When we really reflect on the city - we sabotaged our own downtown ourselves as a city. Granted malls and suburbanization and the belly up of eatons didn't help but we let bad things take their place, and others were left to rot. I went through the city center yesterday - it was eerie, with the pending demolition final sales are everywhere inside - very much felt like eatons final day, but on a much less quality standard - took some time to have some last minute looks at the ceiling and atrium before I mentally said farewell to it.

That tank was probably scooped up by Russia and used in Ukraine.

Hmm. That’s a good reminder Chronamut. I’ll have to take some time maybe this weekend and do a final walk through. It’s been a while.

It's sad - you get this silently waiting feeling - few people silently moving around - my mind goes back to when it was eatons and my mom would drag me there and it was bustling and full of life. I stood there and realized once the new buildings are built I won't even be able to stand in that area anymore - it won't be "publicly" accessible anymore. Kinda sad. Won't be able to have that view of the city through the ceiling either. I mean we all kinda "ewwed" what the city center became, with harts and the other places, but somehow, I dunno, it was still comfortable just.. having it there, even if like so many things it reminded us of hamiltons decline. I just feel what they are replacing it with, doesn't do that area justice, being such a HUGELY historic area of the city and the epicenter OF the city. I mean they demolished entire city BLOCKS for that area, I feel it deserves more than just a buncha little boutique ground floor businesses with skyscrapers on top, but that's just me.

Also some of the upper units from them - I sitll hate the exposed concrete ceilings - beautiful view though:

I don't hate the exposed ceiling, it's a vibe. I do wonder how much it affects sound transmission though. Footfall is one of the major issues people deal with in multi-unit dwellings.

I live in a building with a similar ceiling. You can definitely hear people dropping things, but not footsteps. You also can't hear TVs, or music. It's really just dropping things.

That's good to hear. We live in a duplex where the previous owner did not do the work required to mitigate footfall from above and it can be really annoying sometimes. I don't mind the occasional dropped item, but hearing footsteps and the house shake every time someone walks upstairs isn't optimal.

People shouting and utensils dropping and stuff is largely what I hear in mine. But they at least painted the ceilings white.

More critical to sound-proofing (in a formed concrete building) is what is between the units.

In my current apartment, there is a formed concrete shear wall on one side, and the sound just doesn't travel from that unit next to me. On the other side, there is no shear wall, just a basic non-load bearing interior wall and you can hear everything happening in the apartment on the other side of it — you can pretty clearly hear entire conversations being held at a regular speaking volume.

Similar story with my previous apartment, formed concrete shear wall between the apartment next door, but non load-bearing interior wall between the back of the dining room and the bedroom of the apartment behind. The sound travelled like mad in that portion.

This is a big reason I'm a fan of formed concrete construction, specifically formed concrete walls between units. Makes a huge difference.

Yeah all the walls in mine are formed concrete - only time I really hear stuff is out in the hallway as the sound travels under the door.. I also learned bass travels as I had people complain above me once that it sounded like I was running a club in my unit lol..
