Nobody in my family died because of communism. Nazis killed several. It’s just me, though.
I think this thread should be monitored more closely(mod?). This is not Reddit.

Not sure why you are flagging this as inappropriate. Should only criticize architecture?

It is obvious we have more Ukrainians in Canada than all victims of fascism combine. Not sure why that is controversial.

Ideologies aside, I have a problem with the millions the Feds have put in to bail out the project, and so far we still have little to show for it.

I don't see the relevance to Canada of communism any more that I do the Irish Potato Famine. Both led to large amounts of immigration and Canada was a land of refuge. Should we carve off a chunk of Confederation Park to memorialize the Potato Famine?

Canada assuredly has uncommemorated parts of its history worthy of commemoration.

Toronto has a memorial to the Irish famine.
https://www.canadairelandfoundation.com/...the,famine%E2%80%94just%20west%20of%20Dr.

Ottawa has numerous memorials to people and events not directly connected to Canada. There is a holocaust monument down the street, a monument to (mostly British, probably some Belgian and French) domestic animals killed in war, a statue of Sir Galahad (who likely never even existed), there are statues of Latin American terrorists/freedom fighters (Bolivar and San Martin).

Coincidently (I'm sure), opponents of this monument seem to only apply this criterion to this monument.

You do know the story behind the Sir Galahad monument I hope. It was a very personal dedication.

In honour of a friend of WLMK who died trying to save someone (from drowning I think).

Canada was a combatant in the successful cold War against communism. I'd argue it imploded rather than was defeated but that's debatable.

I agree this public private joint thing always ends up with a bailout. Human Rights museum is a similar vanity project with some outcome.

its location, size, and design are bizarre. I'm mainly offended that such a huge piece of land and millions of dollars are being used for this. Why not throw down a statue in a park somewhere. The scale and scope is so out of touch with the relevance of whats being commemorated. The site could be used for something... useful to the community?

Besides how plainly ideologically driven it all is, I'm generally against this crazy monument building. Ottawa gets shafted, forced to dedicate so much valuable public space to monuments.

I think that’s a.good point, there has been a monument inflation in recent years.

Irish Immigration was very important to Ottawa, as well as Canada. A new monument to them would be nice. However, it is not like we do not have any monuments to the Irish. The Corkstown Bridge was named to honour Irish Labourers on the Canal. Saint Brigid's Canadian Cultural Centre--Home of the Irish Canadian Cultural Centre also exists. https://saintbrigidscentre.com/niccc/

That big old heritage bulding is quite a monument to Ottawa's early Irish in itself.

Saint Isidore Church, in Kanata, and its very old graveyard has been named a heritage site. It served the Irish Immigrants there. Two acres of land was donated for the church in 1839 by my Irish Immigrants ancestors. They are also the ancestors of beloved Ottawa Architect Rod Lahey. I could not resist adding that.

From Julien on RailFans Discord, "progress" on the Victims of Communism monument.

Pretty sure this was a scam to try and get as much cash from the tax payers. We should check Tribute to Liberty and see if built a $6 million dollar headquarters or a private island.

Yeah, as someone who lives nearby and used to walk by the site daily pre-pandemic, I’m trying to figure out how:

- it takes 3+ years to pour a cement pad
- it costs 6M to do so
- and how can high rises pour a floor a week in comparison, that also likely includes rough in for utilities etc.

It’s honestly comical that anyone could get away with saying it should take the time it has taken, and also cost the price tag it has.

Looks like tax payers were victims of a scam. A capitalist scam.

I don't think now is the right time to be making communist vs capitalist jokes. considering what "communist" Russia is once again doing to Ukraine and what "communist" China is doing to the Uyghurs.

Never is the time to downplay this topic. If only if one were to list all the scams and crimes committed by communists both overt and covert... then this memorial ought to cover several city blocks.

I'm of the view communism is the greatest scourge of the 20th century. That said, while the legacy may be present in both countries neither is remotely communist anymore though the state still dominates many industries and is a factor in both genocides. A private gas company might just make a deal with Ukraine instead of endless fighting for example.

It was a blatant ideological ploy by the Harpercons that the JT Liberals got forced into but now want to de-emphasize and slow-track as much as possible due to ideological demons of their own.

Bottom line: they both — when it comes to this one, but for different reasons.

So what's the latest, did they abandon the plan to install the bronze artwork after that contractor debacle?

I mean, fascism? I guess we defeated that relatively quickly, but it's seeing a resurgence in the 21st Century.

Your "" are well placed. Not sure either of those countries can be considered "communist" anymore. Problem today is their dictators more than their historical economic systems.

No one has ever said communism is a perfect system and capitalism is the devil. Both systems are deeply flawed in their own way.
