They do this in London, no?

Passengers at teh ends of the train would have to walk half a car, but that's not too onerous if it means more capacity.

Instead of:

[ O O ][ O O ][ O O ][ O O ]
+--------------------------+

run them as:

[ X O ][ O O ][ O O ][ O O ][ O X ]
++++---------------------------++++

("O" = opening doors, "X" = closed door, "-" = platform, "+" = end of platform)
I'd much prefer they do this for the Canada Line using full-sized 20 metre middle cars rather than the truncated 10 metre C-cars that have been proposed for any capacity expansion. A 60 metre Canada Line train would fill a 50 metre platform with only *one* set of doors at one of the ends being inaccessible. You could establish that the end section of the trains are for "long-haulers" who are riding from terminus to terminus (maybe the seats in that section could be a different colour to signal that there is something special about it) or more daringly: set up some sort of a system where which end hangs off the edge of the platform alternates from station to station. I think the inconvenience of either would be a reasonable price to pay for a 50% increase in capacity.

They do it in London where it is physically impossible to extend the platforms, for instance where it would cut into other lines. It's not a great solution because it severely limits capacity.

When you do that you don't get the full additional peak capacity granted by the additional car because the rate people can get on and off is limited.

Yet over on the Heavy Rail thread you tout that they can be extended no problem.

They can, as soon as we lengthen the stations; at the moment, the stations are long enough and the problem is lack of cars. Even you have to realize how petty you're being at the moment.

How do you extend a tunnel station if there are no knock out sections?

Until relatively recently they did something similar in New York on the 1 line at South Ferry. Only the first five (of eight iirc) cars had access to the platforms.

They are going to have 4 through lanes on the traffic deck completed by the morning of October 22. Soon after they are going to do the bulk excavation and building the station.

That's the Oak Street notice? Seems like a few more weeks to complete the Cambie sewer work in the middle of the road.

how far has the machone gone in 10 days

Since the TBM started Saturday 10 days ago, it should have "disappeared" already down a tunnel of its own making.

Does anyone have an image of how much of the TBM is still visible, if any.

In the rapid transit of the golf phrase, "you put for money but you drive for show"..perhaps we could say, "you tunnel for importance but you lay track for show" ... or something like this.
Have fun with this, if you like.

Given the distance and the 1 year time frame, it should be doing around 15-18m/day by my math.

I walked past today, there’s about 50m of TBM sticking out so it’s progressed around 100 meters.

The rated performance is about 18 meters a day. If after 10 days or so , only 100 meters are already built, then they are just warming it up.

Probably smart.

If there is a glitch or two or ten, it is better to find that out now while the TBM is within reach of daylight and easy access to any maintenance facilities required.

I suspect, in a week or three, they can speed it up as they establish their regular pace.

The Great Northern Way - Emily Carr Station

Today

I'm not sure if they're still feeding the tube with machinery or if that's the back end of the boring machine or it's a ventilate machine at the end of that tube.

Driving home I took a detour to check out our tunnelling machine and spotted a rebar cage going up on Fraser St. took a hard right and to my excitement their were installing it.

I had a closer look today. That's the tail end of the TBM, last piece under the white tarp. It's mounted on rollers on a track, just visible in your picture.
For what its worth it hasn't moved between your picture yesterday and this afternoon.

I drive through Mount Pleasant at least 3 times a week using Broadway or 1st, 21 years living DT and never used G N Way to go home. I will now, for more postings.

Does Translink have a public relations site

Why doesn't Translink have a "daily progress" web site?
Even a Saturday weekly update would be fun.
Something like
Tunnel A 2% complete
Tunnel B 0% complete
Main Street Box 15% complete

etc.

I am sure they have it for themselves.
