The dealer has moved to Rymal and Upper James now, but still goes by the name "Bay King"

They relocated to the south mountain many years ago, likely taking the proceeds of the sale of their Bay street properties to build the new dealership.

That's right.

I was thinking about HMP but that was roughly where Homewood is and had a Main St. showroom, didn't it? Totally forgot about Bay King, even though I drive past their Upper James and Rymal location fairly often. Any recall on when they moved? Has to have been at least 20 years?

Yeah, HMP was at Main and Bay and closed up some time in the early 2000's. The building was torn down along with a portion of the old federal building next door a few years later when then the Hilton went up and then 150 Main West started. Bay/King must have been gone for years before that, I've lived in Hamilton since 2000 and I don't remember it ever being there.

Bay King Chrysler moved to Upper James and Rymal ages ago. I can barely recall their old location back in the late 80s and 90s.

They moved to the mountain in 1990 on Upper James. They are now on Rymal Rd. just around the corner. The old Upper James location is now a camper dealership.

Are there *any* auto dealers for the major brands left in the lower city, aside from the few that remain on Centennial?

Have to wonder if they're all doomed, eventually. Buying a car online is pretty easy, and I've heard a few people say they didn't even test drive one last time they bought new. The overhead of keeping all that space for a showroom and lot must be big.

Used car lots will probably always be around, though that's a business that's been becoming more and more corporate over time.

Dewildt Chrysler Dodge Jeep at the Queenston Traffic Circle
Eastgate Ford on Parkdale North of Barton
Hamilton Hyundai on the Corner of Barton and Parkdale

Those are the 3 others I can think of.

This’ll be the densest block in city, surely?

Thanks. Totally forgot about those (I'm not on Parkdale or Queenston very often these days)

Dewildt's lot must be rising in value with the LRT. I wonder if they'll cash in and move in the next few years. It would be great to see a development on that side of Queenston to complement what is planned on the east.

I mean... technically this is cladding. I suspect it might be a while before we see the gold.

Looks like some sort of cladding is going up. Look at floor two or the first regular size floor.

A good picture for anyone questioning Hamilton having the 4th densest downtown in Canada.

Are there any plans for the parking lot across the street (king and bay) behind the health sciences center and beside the art gallery? An office building like the new Effort Trust one at that corner would look nice

edit: an office building with ground floor commercial/retail

That parking lot is also owned by McMaster so I suspect one day we will see redevelopment of the property, likely to include more buildings catered to actually teaching, perhaps another lecture hall and some graduate research rooms and such. It seems McMaster is slowly building a downtown campus which is interesting to me, because I don't see a real reason for it outside if being somewhere central and a decently large city. The campus has a ton of space left.

Think about how much trouble it's been for them to have the new residence at 1190 Main W. built, when they build downtown they can go bigger and don't have the same hindrances as in Westdale.
