Thank you! I don't have to keep refreshing the ADS-B to see if it is coming this evening or not.

Don't think they are carrying 400 passengers, it's probably similar to the new Air Force One which is also using a 747-8i and will carry 71 passengers. Lots of space taken up by meeting rooms, military/communications hardware etc.

Excessive?? damn right

We absolutely need to call out this hypocrisy, while these same governments impose carbon taxes and caps on its ordinary citizens, they get a free pass?
I bet they just don't have the budget to upgrade their plane to 787.
South Korea is a developed democracy with a rich history of Presidential corruption, so they don't want to change things to avoid any backlash.

I actually don’t disagree with the sentiment it’s just a somewhat weird target to attack. The KAF 748 is leased from Korean Air and was retrofitted to meet VIP transport requirements, including I’m sure office/meeting space, significant tech, lodging, and capacity for a certain size of delegation. There’s also security aspects and countermeasures to be sure.

A 787 would be more efficient on fuel burn, sure, but is a much smaller aircraft and would be less accommodating of their needs. Don’t forget they updated from a B744, so a template already existed. What would they sacrifice in a downsizing?

Better to target wasteful usage of jets by a handful of pax at a time, especially over short distances … our very own government is guilty of that.

Friday’s departure count: 64

Friday’s cancellation count (so far): 5 - 4 of which are to the Maritimes in the afternoon/evening no doubt ahead of the approaching storm.

Also 4/7 of the last departures of the day are to Alberta and 3/4 of those are to YEG. Nobody wants to serve YOW-YEG in the morning.

How certain are we of the runway 25 arrival? Southerly arrivals often like to use 32 irrespective of active runway unless conditions really disallow it. VIPs get a shorter hop to the reception centre this way too.

With the construction on taxiway A 25 is the preferred runway, the pilots have said they will accept up to a 30 kt crosswind.

They will depart off 32 when they leave.

Here it is coming in over the Runway 32 threshold.

Pretty sure that's the first ever visit of a -8 to YOW.

Nice shot. Were you airside?

The highlight of my flying “career” involved the 748. A work trip had me fly YOW-FRA-India-FRA-YOW on an LH 748 one way and an LH 388 the other, in biz to boot.

There have been a few 748s visit. Cargo version recently. A Cathay Pacific 787 passenger was here on diversion a few years ago

The National 747 last week was a -400F.

The only 748s CX operates are cargo as their 747 passenger fleet retired long ago. Has one of those visited YOW?

Remember when YOW had regular 747 service last century?

Saturday’s departure count: 51

Saturday’s cancellation count: 5 - not surprisingly all to YHZ & YYG

First time post. I am a frequent flyer. I am losing faith in Ottawa airport authority ever getting its act together. Without a European direct flight, why bother? It's easier flying from Trudeau than risk missed connections (which have been dramatically reduced) or longer connections.

I really want to support YOW, but they aren't even hitting the minimum of where they need to be at this point. The Air France / KLM bus are a much better option than an infrequent dash 8 to Montreal. Fast forward to other bus lines offering peak hour connectors to Trudeau in the near future. Where will YOW be then once traffic patterns are established.

At this point, YOW need a loss leader international carrier to keep the airport from becoming internationally irrelevant (irrespective southern destinations).

It’s all about numbers. If you want YOW to increase flight options, stop buying tickets where YUL is the starting point. It doesn’t show up as a point of sale in YOW and YUL will get that number. As long as people keep driving to YUL, YOW has no hope. Think about it in an airline’s perspective. Why go through the trouble of increasing operations in another airport when clearly there are people willing to drive to the hub airport? This is an airline’s dream to get connecting passengers without actually putting in the effort to connect them. In terms of KLM/AF bus service, the more people who actually use it, the more KLM/AF solidify their beliefs that we do not need direct air service. We are the only city in Canada of comparable size where KLM/AF does not serve. In my humble and probably controversial opinion, those who keep driving to YUL are not allowed to complain about the options YOW has or doesn’t have. You should look up “stop the Calgary habit”. It’s a sort of “protest” people in Edmonton were trying out where they were urged to stop driving to Calgary. Check out what happened after.

I don’t blame it all on the passengers who drive to YUL though. We had 60+ daily flights to hub airports pre-pandemic. How many more do we need before airlines say “ok that’s enough, they are an important travel market and maybe now it’s time to add some direct flights”.

It’s the Ottawa way; complain about an issue while being contributory to it. It’s always someone else’s job to make things better.

Ottawa's main problem currently is we are by far the most COVID cautious city in Canada where many people are still delaying trips/vacations due to COVID. As a result, we are far behind other airports in terms of recovery to our pre-COVID volumes at the airport. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but I am often surprised by how many young/healthy people who I talk to who are "not ready to travel". Ottawa is a very conservative and cautious place and the pandemic has really shone a light on it.

We will recover, we will get our European flights back, and we will get new US destinations (hopefully via Porter). But it's going to be a SSSSLLLOOOWWW recovery.

Let’s also hope Porter’s hub in YOW attracts other carriers, specifically those with codeshare agreements with them!
