I went by there a few days ago and it looks like the Musée des Sports might already be gone. At least, all of the signage has been removed and it's now a CENTRE DE PRÉSENTATION (for Brigil's various projects, I assume).

What I would propose is the new Grande Bibliothèque Gatineau has been talking about for years. Something around 4 floors, integrating the façade of at least the old Chez Henri, cafés and restaurants at street level. The new cultural institution could include the Gatineau Sports museum and maybe a history of the Outaouais History. Hull is also missing a larger performance hall (say 1,000-1,500 seats). On the west side of the lot that was excluded from the heritage designation, they could build a 20 storey hotel tower.

The City of Gatineau could either buy the property from Brigil, perform a land swap (say for Guertin, which is much larger but further from the traditional core) or, less likely, work with them.
I like this idea, with a few caveats.

- Brigil is likely to ask for a hefty compensation (either cash or land-wise) when you consider what they had planned for that site, and probably still have in mind.

- It's a bit far away from the parts of Vieux-Hull that the city wants to revitalize, and it seems like we're already getting to have too many isolated pockets of life separated by blocks of deadness. Spreading ourselves too thin in a downtown that's already weak. Sometimes I think it would be great if the Museum, the Théâtre de l'Île, the Brasseurs du Temps and a few other things from Montcalm, and some other stuff scattered here and there, was all concentrated a lot closer to the Promenade du Portage. We'd have a much more vibrant downtown it seems.

- I believe the historic façade you are referring to is the old Café Henry Burger (Papaye Verte), and not the Chez Henri, which is on Portage.

It seems like they haven't given up yet on this site.

They added a new design of the "Place Des Peuples" and it says a 10 year plan (site is in French).

https://www.brigil.com/communaute/23-place-des-peuples?lang=fr&id=23&media=1#pdp_media

They also have a Ferris Wheel for the area it looks like? Interesting but I don't think anything comes to fruition here. I think they have a better shot at a game changing development at the former Greyhound bus terminal at this point.

I like the gondola idea! Especially if it is extended south to Lansdowne and North all the way to the plateau

What happens at Zibi when the poo paper plant does close down? Whether it be 10, 15 or 25 years, it will close down at some point. I think Zibi uses their hot water to run the entire district?

This is obviously just an artistic representation of future Gatineau, but I really do like that cable car idea. The water taxi is seasonal, the cable car could run 365 days a year.

They can still use the river for cooling, they would just need to make some kinda heating plant to replace the industrial waste. Thankfully it wouldn't have to be anywhere close to the scale of the feds'.

I like the gondola idea too, forgot to mention that... but would City of Ottawa and Ville de Gatineau actually work together to implement it? I don't think so, unfortunately.

I agree with you both, I really do like the potential of that idea. Who would be able to implement something like that though?

They wouldn't run a cable car from ground level on the Ottawa side where the bridge deck starts, it would run much higher and would have no effect on views.

I would hardly call La Grande Roue in MTL or The London Eye 'Themepark'ish. Ferris wheels are excellent additions to historical areas in my opinion, they allow extended birds eye views and attract tourists to the city.

How is a gondola or ferris wheel akin to turning the Parliament area into a themepark lol?

I'm darn near the most free spirit out there but a Gondola or Ferris wheel would be much better suited around Zibi or Lebreton.

Parliament, Museum of Canadian History, Nation Gallery, Canal Locks, whatever is going on with Nepeans Point, backside(RIP) of Chateau Laurier don't need anymore fluff if you ask me. That little circle is fine the way it is. We don't need any new age add-ons.

The replacement of the Alexandria bridge would be a much larger concern. There are plenty of ways to include transit and cycling/walking in a neat and interesting way. That should be the focus for a crowd pleaser IMO.

Unpacking this rendering, my first though is that we've already been through this and these heights have been rejected by the community and the City for that site. If they want to build high, they can do it across the street a the Sharepoint. Keep this site for 8-12 floors as to not overshadow the Museum or the heritage district.

Second point, they are again proposing to build over land they don't own (St. Joseph Private School parking lot).

As for the fluff they added, I don't think the gondola is necessary. Rebuilding the bridge and creating the tram loop will take-up enough funds for basically the same use. The Kruger Plant s here to stay. The Ferris wheel would be better suited for LeBreton or Zibi (as already mentioned) or even Confederation Park Canal side.

The ferris wheel, by common use, is a theme park ride...sticking it in a historic Parliamentary/museum district doesn't change that. The London Eye is not directly across from the houses of Parliament on the river.
The gondola could replace the very popular water taxi, but operate 365 days per year. It would be heavily utilized during Winterlude. It's also weather protected and usable by mobility impaired people, so it DEFINITELY serves a transportation purpose that isn't already going to be fulfilled by the bridge.

Only one of the top 30 largest Ferris Wheels, which are often labeled 'Observation Wheels', is located in a theme park. In fact, only a handful of the 100 largest are located in theme parks. Just because carnivals have little ferris wheels in them doesn't mean that permanently fixed observation wheels should be considered staples of a theme park.

Exactly. And it's not like it has to be exactly where Brigil envisioned, but both of those can be very useful within the areas around the river.

That's a fair point.

I wonder if the gondola could be integrated with the bridge in some way. Imagine the current Alexandria boardwalk having a gondola suspended above it for example. That could be interesting for both pedestrians and gondola riders.

You will never be able to get the gondola so high in the air that it would serve as an all seeing eye due to the topography.

I'm just not sure where you would board the gondola from the Ottawa side without severely impacting what are supposed to be historic viewplanes and also getting it to reach into the market area. Is boarding at the edge of Majors Hill park adjacent to the new pedestrian bridge acceptable? It would have to be as I can't see it going any further. Perhaps boarding at the side of Chateau Laurier where the staircase goes down next to the canal? Once again... Tough sell due to visual impact despite being a great connection.

I'm open to ideas and could be on board but sorting the Alexandria bridge is a much bigger priority and IF the gondola ever gets built it needs to be planned in conjunction.

But.. it's Ottawa... The ped bridge at Majors Hill Park, Alexandria bridge and gondola will all be separate projects with zero consideration for each other.

The fact that we are in a jurisdiction ran by a half dozen separate entities that aren't super keen on working with each other and have their own mandates really hampers our growth as a city.

In a way it's kind of cool that you can cross the bridge to Quebec and IMMEDIATLY feel like you are in a different place. I like that. I just wish our onion layers of government could work together more efficiently to build us large scale regional projects.

Funneling dozens of large diesel trucks per hour through Rideau and Waller is probably my largest gripe.

NOBODY wants to solve this problem. Literally punching the air right now.

I thought that it would be nice to have a bi-level bridge so that pedestrians could cross from either the lower (road) level or the upper level of Nepean Point. There would be great views from the middle of the river, if a person was on the upper level. There could be circular ramps between the levels.

Nobody wants gondola people to 'look in their windows'.

Here's an idea: Run it low. Under the new bridge across the Ottawa river, and then as low as possible along the eastern side of the locks, along the cliff unused parking lot where the original train tracks ran, and then down and under the sapper's bridge, where there will be a station, around where the bike rental agency is, and past trolley station (trouble is, there's three 'holes' to sappers bridge on the south, and only two 'holes' on the north due to the Senate meeting rooms and stairs on the North. Some adjustments to be made). Then, run it in the grassy median between Col By and the bike path alllll the way to Carleton terminus, at the O-Train station, with stops at the Corktown Bridge (under), Petoria Bridge (adjacent, on a platform), Flora Footbridge (under) and the Bank Street bridge (adjacent, on a platform). On the Gatineau side, Allumittieres is perfectly built for a median set of towers, with stops at at Laurier/Maisonneuve (combined) and the Rapibus Corridor?

Lol, and hear me out, you could even run a shorter version down the canal and terminate at Hurdman, but that would be a bit of a double-up on the Train service. My idea services Lansdowne for after-game distribution, AND the major universities day-to-day, AND gov't employees who live on the dark side.

Edit: I mean, it's never, ever going to happen, but it's fun to dream!
