Sadly for edmonton, it was only a Sherbrooke-sized city with a corresponding downtown core (more impressive actually) by the time it got to the post-war urban modernism boom. Edmonton's downtown is a perfect representation of late 20th century urban design, while lacking the layers and history of older cities like Toronto or Montreal.

There isn't a single block in Edmonton that has a true urban landscape and continuity that isn't doesn't have a concrete office tower in the middle of it or a entrance to a mega parking garage. Does your vision of this true urban landscape include modernism because it certainly doesn't sound like it does. I've never really being in a position to sit outside and watch all the people go by in Edmonton. The modernist commercial area north of the capital building anchored by 8th is a solid foundation to build from and the green Oliver neighbourhood is a more than adequate urban residential neighbourhood. Many of the modernist towers on side street have had ground floor units converted to service retail.

First time driving down the DVP to the Gardiner in three years last night. The awesomeness quotient just keeps on going up. It's a bit like the Jetsons, only without the flying cars (for you young kids, that would be a snappy and pithy reference if you knew anything).

Otherwise, though, Toronto traffic is heavy and bad. Whenever I'm at a standstill on the 401 I look around at all the other cars and think, "what kind of idiot drives on the 401?"

Worst. Traffic. Ever.

Yes. I still remember the time I was on the 401 in 2015 and encountered a huge backup. The car in the lane beside us was this little mini copper convertible and there was this tractor trailer that had to do this full emergency stop procedure right behind them to the extent that the trailer was shaking, wheels locking, brakes smoking etc. and the person in the back seat of the mini just sat there expressionless turned around looking up at this huge thing towering over them. It stopped maybe a foot from them. I was like ok...

It's usually at least a month after I get back before i can start complaining about the traffic here again.

It's not just the 401. It's bad everywhere. Worst than 10 years ago. Inconceivable from 20 years ago.

The DVP is one to love or hate and I love it.

Yep. DVP is fine if it's timed correctly, and usually has a pretty good view of something if you're stuck. Once all those proposals at Wynford and Eglinton go up it'll be even better.

A stunning photo by @wmedia who didn’t mind my 2 minute future scribble below (didn’t have access to my Photoshop obviously so no attempt to be accurate re: exact location, height etc).

Was just looking at the financial district "mountain" in the photo I couldn't resist taking a (crappy) peek at another peak… the southern "mountain" cluster that will emerge in the future from this POV. I just added a CIBC Phase 2 shape to the left of the CN Tower, and SkyTower plus a couple of the tallest Sugar Wharf towers (eventually 6 towers in total) to the right of the tower.

The entire Bloor/Yorkville - south to the lake skyline, will be a panoramic 4 peaks mountain range one day when viewing from Humber Bay.

1. Bloor/Yorkville + 2. very tall u/c and planned projects from College to Gerrard forming a new peak + 3. Financial District + 4. Southcore and waterfront. It's going to be quite a sight.

Is it just me or are those balconies not straight? If you draw a line connecting them the widths are all over the place. Unless that's intentional?

I was being sarcastic. I do wonder what a 53-storey tower might do for that view, or a trio of tall-ish buildings.
