that 2nd pic in that Edmonton set shows a lot of potential.. .. but

Indeed... the worst actually.

Thankfully it is getting a 1.4Ha new 'warehouse park' for much of it next year.

and these next abutting it on some of the other lots.

An interesting ugly mix of Gatineau's skyline in the foreground blocking most of Ottawa's downtown tabletop skyline in the background, with Parliament being a shining jewel in the rough.

Great photos! Although, yeah, it's not the best cityscape in the world to say the least. Although I must say, it is representative of your average Canadian urbanscape, so in this way it's only proper that Canada's capital mirrors your run of the mill Canadian aesthetic.

Agreed, but only from vantage points looking inward at the core. Almost all of Ottawa's extensive new skyline action is going on OUTSIDE of the core. I liken it to a bowl, where the tabletop core is steadily being surrounded by a ring of taller buildings. It's a natural outcome as the city grows around the protected view planes of Parliament.

Let's not mince words. Those four Edmonton shots are phreaking bleak and depressing. Urban charm = zero.

Edmonton has really turned a corner, so much development in the last few years, the future potential looks promising indeed.

I totally agree.

It's great that the downtown is finally filling up some of those horrid parking lots and the population is growing but it is still looks dystopian. I don't think there is a single block in downtown Edmonton that would qualify as a complete street.

Of Canada's major cities, Edmonton remains my least favorite by a long shot.

One must also consider every city is filling holes in the urban fabric and, most of the time, faster than Edmonton. The scale of development has a lot to do with the current pace. The holes will be filled one day. I probably won't be around to see it. The only hope I have is for investors to gravitate to Edmonton once they have made Calgary ridiculously expensive. It's too early to know if a sustained investor boom will occur in Calgary. They have resurrected the dead condo market in no time.

^^^ Creating urbanity requires more than just people. It requires a sense of community, urban place, walkability, solid architectural form, complete streets, and charm. Edmonton's downtown has none of this.

There isn't a single block in Edmonton that has a true urban landscape and continuity that isn't doesn't have a concrete office tower in the middle of it or a entrance to a mega parking garage. In short, there isn't any place in it's downtown where one can sjust sit outside and watch all the people go by.
