2nd pic - when built, that federal building completely obscured the dramatic view of the Capitol when driving NB on 35 from the Riverside area coming into Austin.

That ugly piece of crap building needs to be torn down and the city grid restored.

Mormon Springs

Mormon Springs, Mount Baker and Mount Bonnell in Distance, Austin

Mormon Springs was named for a breakaway polygamist sect of Mormons. Their mill was washed away and the entire group re-located to Burnet County. The springs are located at the western end of 35th street near the base of Mount Bonnell.

There is a road in Marble Falls called Mormon Mill that goes up to the site of the re-located mill in Burnet County. The mill site is private land now but the road is there.

The Year was 1965. Average cost of gas was 30 cents per gallon.

Still love the orange tower downtown. It is too bad they had to change it, even though it is basically all covered up by taller building now.

I dont know if those giant steel/stone(?) planters are still there today, butthose things were there for at least a couple of decades after this photo.

I started visiting Austin around this time, (summer of 88) staying with my sister in her apartment of East Riverside, then moving back to the valley for school that fall of 88 and finally moving here for good in may of 1989.

This is the Austin I remember. I also remember thinking how this was a biig city compared to where I was from, especially with all those tall buildings.

Lady Bird Johnson was instrumental in the beautification drive, as I recall.

Yep, that's why they changed the name of Town Lake against her wishes after she died.

Yeah. I still call it Town Lake. The hike & bike trail or Auditorium Shores should have gotten the 'Lady Bird' moniker.

I agree. And as far as the lake is concerned, forever Town Lake.
