I would've never quessed the location. It was probably appropriately sized given the population at the time was only 186k.
But man that's tiny, just like the car to the right of the parked cars.
That's a cool pic!

From that angle the Barton Springs/Riverside crossover makes no sense at all. Why not just align them into a grid?

That’s what it looked like when I got here.
Attended a UT pre-game bonfire between Riverside and the bank of the Colorado River over where the Colosseum was.

That is kind of how I remember it from back in 1969. I guess maybe there were a few more trees planted and the beginnings of a riverside park by that time, but it was pretty bleak looking. The change from back then to today is amazing.

I was going to ask the same thing. Why was it designed that way. Seems like the crossing roads are unnecessary

OMG, I had forgotten about the Colosseum. The whole area really has changed a lot with better use of the park space, and maturing of the greenery. And boy are we in for massive change IF the current batch of proposed buildings/developments come to fruition. Including the rail plan. Now I really want a major attraction to be built in that view; Major Art Museum, Aquarium, etc. If we have to grow this much, lets grow into the Big Leagues.

Let's start with a redesign of the Long Ctr to bring it in line with a city the size of Austin. Beautiful on the inside but ugly on the outside. But somehow keep the ring.

I don't mind the Long Center for what it is. What I don't like is the surface lot and giant parking structure behind it. I feel that those areas could be redone somehow.

There was once talk of putting the parking garage below ground. That idea doesn't appear to have gone anywhere though.

Yeah, anything like that certainly wouldn't be a small undertaking. Perhaps when the rail station is up and running there may be a bit more support? Wishful thinking, I know.
