What about working conditions and hours? Most transit has a spare board new hires get put on. That is not exactly something most people would welcome.

Spare boards. Split shifts. If a warehouse can guarantee you 85% of the wage but ensure m-f 5 shifts a week, home for dinner every day, which would you choose?

Good afternoon Your Worship and distinguished Councillors,

In the spirit of transparency, let me preface this letter with a declaration that I am a 'Class A' shareholder of this venture.

However, I did not make a very modest investment in this grassroots project because of an expected financial return, but rather because I believe that Edmonton can look past traditional transportation vernacular, methods of project delivery, work to develop more nimble partnerships and restore a belief of what this city can become.

Rather than providing additional rational as to why the land agreements, framework or fundamentals are well thought out, vetted and providing secure foundations for all involved, I would rather share more about the vision that I bought into and the potential community benefits from its realization.

Edmonton's best asset is its river valley. It is most treasured because of its ability to deliver a variety of experiences, be them natural, historical, sporting or leisure; this project can compliment the very essence of these diverse relationships with this special place and work to share it with more Edmontonians, on a more regular basis, with a very small environmental footprint.

Taking a risk is not the most Edmonton thing you can do; Council must consider exposure to its shareholders - the taxpayers and citizens of Edmonton. However, I ask you to consider some of the 'risky' decisions made since it became a city in 1904. Inherently, there was risk in all of the great projects that we now revel at and are fortunate to have had built over the years. Where would Edmonton be today without the Canadian Pacific Railway's High Level Bridge or Wop May & Max Ward's pioneering spirit to open up the north or provide Edmonton with international gateways. I think about the city builders, the Allard's and their contributions to media, technology, entertainment and the Arts or companies like Maclab who understood that their success from providing Edmontonians with homes was intrinsically paired with their philanthropy and desire to give back; to strengthen community. The Ghermezian's, the Day's, the Katz's and more recently the Beljan's of the world remind us that private ventures can leave lasting legacies for decades to come, enriching our natural and built environments in a respectful way.

This project has the potential to connect communities, provide accessible and sustainable transportation options to more citizens and deliver a unique experience for those that call Edmonton home and to those who visit.

As such, I ask that you consider supporting the vision that Gary and Amber Poliquin had from their winning submission to the Edmonton Project competition by way of this proposal and required land agreements, for I believe that 'Community is the most Edmonton thing you can do'.

Thank you for your time and consideration of the above.

Sincerely,

IanO

One of the article comments is biting but accurate. How OC Transpo and the city botched its bus service because of rationalization both before and after LRT opened and I will add a further rationalization because of the pandemic. There is little hope of recovering ridership. Although nobody could predict the impact of the pandemic, they turned LRT from a positive for the rider to a negative by focusing on efficiency for the transit system rather than efficiency for the rider.

After hearing dozens of people speaking for and against the proposed Prairie Sky Gondola, executive committee pushed the decision on whether to approve a land agreement with the developers to next week’s city council meeting. The company has agreed to pay about $1.1 million annually to lease public property for the project, saying it would be 100% privately funded, not integrated with ETS, and meant to be running by 2026. Many questions were raised about whether the development would disturb the burial grounds on the Rossdale flats and what would happen if remains were discovered during construction. Mayor Amarjeet Sohi told Postmedia he couldn’t support the gondola without certainty that the burial sites would remain undisturbed, given the city’s commitment to reconciliation. Coun. Aaron Paquette also questioned whether Prairie Sky was committed to consulting with Indigenous communities or just determined to “get to ‘yes’.”

So, advocates killed its integration with ETS, then that lack of integration is possibly used to deep six the entire project?

What a waste.

There will be integration of some sort, for it is an essential part of the pro forma.

Prairie Sky Gondola Announces Cree Name for the Project – ᐋᓱᐊᐧᐦᐅᓈᐣ (âsowahonân)

Chosen in a traditional naming ceremony, the name translates to “crossing of the river”

August 12, 2022 (Edmonton, AB) – Dr. Dwayne Donald, a professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta, a descendant of Papaschase Cree Nation and a ceremonial helper of Elder Bob Cardinal of the Enoch Cree Nation, announced the new name of Prairie Sky Gondola at a public meeting for Edmonton City Council’s Executive Committee on August 10, 2022.

ᐋᓱᐊᐧᐦᐅᓈᐣ

âsowahonân gondola

In English, âsowahonân translates to “crossing of the river.” In April of this year, the Cree name was given to the gondola during a sweat lodge ceremony at Enoch Cree Nation.

Indigenous engagement and participation in the project are of the highest importance to the gondola project and its proponents. Indigenous archeologist, Cody Sharphead, will lead as the archeological advisor for the project.

Jeffrey Hansen-Carlson, President and CEO of Prairie Sky Gondola, says: “We deeply respect the cultural importance of Rossdale Flats to Indigenous peoples and fully recognize that, as we work to move the project forward, sincere and robust Indigenous engagement is of paramount importance. Seeking guidance for the name of our project in ceremony is consistent with our unwavering intent to be proactive, genuine, and respectful.”

Prairie Sky Gondola is honoured to have been gifted an Indigenous name in ceremony and sees this as an early step in a journey towards a common purpose and advancing the cause of reconciliation.

thankfully, Edmonton city council has nixed the urban gondola project here. Nobody wanted it, and truly only those vested in it were pushing for it. The numbers were made up out of thin air, and highly laughable to anyone who put any sort of thought in to it.

Good move city council!
