Hillbrow looks fascinating, if a little dangerous.

Some pics I don't believe I've posted before in the spoiler.

The similarities stem from the 1960s/70s brick residential buildings IMO.

The Beltline has a sizeable amount of those 70's era brick apartments that aren't quite commie blocks. It's underrepresented in all the skyline photos leading some who have never visited the city before to think that Calgary goes from Corporate towers to SFH's with nothing in between. Lately I've found those grittier areas and buildings to be more interesting than most of the shiny new condos.

I think a lot of that perception comes from photos showing the areas across the river juxtaposed with downtown. That's what started the silly "shacks beside the stacks" thread iirc.

Yes. And one particular forumer's obsession with them in Calgary even though he's never set foot inside the city (Well maybe on the TransCanada highway). Areas north of DT like Kensington and Bridgeland are bustling with midrise development now. Just look at the first couple pics in that set.

It reminds me of Seattle actually...especially the buildings in the background. Beautiful images of Calgary.

Out of curiosity I did the comparison between Halifax and Victoria and I'm kind of shocked that Victoria has as few highrises as it does. SSP diagrams built + u/c has Halifax at 141 and Victoria at 73, while limiting it to over 50m Halifax has 57 while Victoria has 20. Somehow I got the impression that they were as similar skyline wise as they are in population. I never found them similar looking, but I just assumed that was because of the difference in building styles and general layout.

Ya is there a height limit in Victoria? It looks fairly thick but not that tall.

They both have a sort of layered effect due to the hilly landscapes and tight urban fabric surrounded by ocean and forest, and the overall scale and "quality" feel similar, but the individual buildings are different enough that it would be hard to mistake one for the other. A lot of Victoria's larger buildings have a Châteauesque influence that is totally absent in Halifax, while Halifax has a lot more brash modernism, and its oldest buildings are older but less visible from a distance. Both of them are colourful but Victoria feels lighter and airier, and has huge mountains as a backdrop, while Halifax has almost-mountains that are largely built over with suburbs. I would say they're about as similar as Vancouver and Victoria are similar, but for different reasons.

Emporis has 75 high rise buildings in Victoria and 105 in Halifax

Dylan is from Victoria. It is the most complete in Canada with over 100 buildings between 3 and 9 floors.

This is definitely not complete however, people may still be surprised
Montreal 59 high rises under construction
Vancouver 30 high rises under construction

An alternate source like Emporis would be useful if it showed a notably higher number for one or both since it would reveal a lot of missing projects, but with numbers basically the same for Victoria and much lower for Halifax it seems pretty useless. Unless we're to believe that the SSP database has dozens of projects listed for Halifax that don't actually exist? Much more likely that their Halifax section just isn't up to date.
