Yep, they made the wild decision to go bandaid approach during covid and demo the mall entirely. Just crazy, it was the 3rd or 4th highest productivity shopping centre in Canada and they just leveled it.

This is probably the nicest rendering of the entire project although it is heavily greenwashed.

I went by the site a couple of months ago and that's exactly what I thought when I saw the enormous amount of demolition/construction taking place. Asian megacity vibes.

Thanks for the detailed Toronto update Maldive. It’s almost too much to comprehend really. Looking forward to see how the Lower Don Lands turns out as I think Toronto has hit peak skyscraper. Would like to see dense mid-rise communities that are walkable and really enjoyable at street level stretch out for miles now - well amongst the existing high rise transit corridors.

WoW!

This isn't a meant as a direct comparison as Oakridge is a suburban mall redevelopment and the other is next to the Toronto central business district. One also has much more stackable residential space than retail. It's about the size of the 4.5 million square foot Sugar Wharf and I don't think anyone would have than perspective.

* Just north of the Lower Don Lands, this is already happening on a big scale in the West Don Lands neighbourhood, redrawing much of the former urban wasteland from Parliament to the Don River (note: a number of projects have already been built like Corktown Community, River City designed by Saucier + Perrotte and the Pan Am athlete’s village).

I call this the “West Dane Lands” … under construction, approved and proposed designs from Cobe Architects (2 big projects), Henning Larsen etc., with a helping hand from domestic architects like aA and BDP Quadrangle (and soon Henriquez Partners). Having a great developer like Dream involved in most of all these developments doesn’t hurt.

Here’s one that already looks better than the renderings (a first?): “Canary Landing” by Cobe (from Copenhagen of course ;-) with a great design, great materials/execution.... and roomy sidewalks to boot.

By ‘peak skyscraper’ for TO I mean what else is there left to do? Knowing that there are and will be hundreds to come. I’m liking the mid-rise districts more so in terms of ‘liveability’ and street vibe. I mean I guess Toronto could still have a Billionaire’s Row, but not sure how welcome that would be. They could also move more towards away other types of cladding besides glass - some terracotta as expensive as that would be. I’d like to see a city bring back some of the classic skyscraper designs of the 1930s and 1940’s - reimagined and re-engineered for today. I guess that’s what’s left, lol.

Still have to catch Chicago for number of 500 footers. The creation of all these subforums on SSC and SSP is in part to the spats between Torontonians and Chicagoans 20 years ago when, "Toronto had the tallest high rises and Vancouver had the most" The Australians followed up with the lack of 500 footers in Toronto. Pretty sure Toronto has completed more than the entire nation of Australia now.
