Chicago has a ton of prewar skyscrapers, something no city in Europe (or in fact much of the United States) has. It also has a ton of distinctive skyscrapers built between 1960 and 1980, again, something that no city in Europe has.
I do think that DT Chicago suffers a bit because nearly all of the small buildings are gone whereas many blocks in Manhattan, and of course everywhere in Europe, still have small prewar buildings in the business districts.
