Office buildings and lots of retail boarded up and covered in graffiti and the kicker. Armed Guards in many retail stores (Nordstrom and Whole foods to name a few). Even got to witness two clearly homeless people get into a fight in the middle of the street in front of a street car.
The tents are also not relegated to the downtown core. They are literally everywhere. Residential areas etc. Very little police presence.
What i really find scary in relation to vancouver situation is they do not clear the streets there of the tents/structures which the VPD and city were doing to clean the streets up until last month and of course east hastings is now blocks of tents and structures. I am just wondering how far this will spread beyond the DTES.

Unless stiff rules with enforcement are introduced, we are witnessing the dearth of civil society as we know today, especially in city centre cores. The so-called liberal leaders are apparently cowards for being unable to solve or even tackle this crisis. Vancouver is no exception. This morning, I saw so many passed out drug addicts in so many parts of downtown. They need to be hauled away so that they can't get to their drugs. This is the only way to save them.
There was a time when Chinese opium addicts were called "Sick Men of the East", which also coincided with the decline of China under the rule of foreigners, or the brutal Manchurians who were originally tribesmen from Siberia, during the Qing dynasty. These "takers" did not care what would happen to the people, and China became impoverished as a result. Seriously, we are seeing the same thing happening here in North America for the past couple of decades. There is simply no good news when you let drugs become so widespread and accepted in society while those in charge continue to be apathetic as they reap in the bounties from those who are still willing to work and pay taxes. Society simply grinds to a halt and then starts decaying rapidly, and the nation grows weak. Internal strife and violence ensue. Sounds familiar?
Today we are seeing the emergence of "The Sick Men of the West". North America is leading the pack.
