I originally broke the Fiji story and thought the first position was a customer service one.

Certainly sounds promising.

You wouldn’t hire an ops manager if you weren’t planning on having someone who “Directs and manages the airline's ground handling suppliers' at YVR”

I guess an announcement will follow soon!

I do wonder with their limited fleet of long haul aircrafts, how often will they be flying to YVR.

I can't imagine them flying that often, so give or take about 2-3x weekly ?

Can't imagine it would be more than 3x weekly, that'd be my guess.

I would agree, twice a week or more if it’s a tag on from somewhere else (ie SFO).

I guess these would be the planes that could reach Vancouver?

Quote:
two A350-900s leased from DAE Capital;
one A330-300 leased from Avolon;
three in-house A330-200s; (two A330-200s leased from Carlyle Aviation Partners were returned last year);
five B737-8s MAX leased from GECAS;
one leased B737-800 (another was returned to lessors in November).

If there is no wide body aircraft available, do you think they would they opt for NAN-HNL-YVR with the Max 8 ?

Looking at their schedule, the two A350s are doing the following routes daily:
NAN-LAX-NAN-SYD-NAN

Two of the 4 A330s are doing the runs to HKG, NRT, and SIN with morning or early afternoon departure from NAN. This departure time would means arrival at YVR between 12 and 3am... so any leftover slot for these 2 planes (5x weekly) would probably better to use for expansion for Asian routes.

The last 2 A330s are running to AKL in the morning, and SFO in the evening for 3-4 days of the week. I do not see any other widebody departures for the winter schedule. So my best guess, they would use this plane for a potential YVR route on some or all of the off-days (Mon, Wed, Sun), departing NAN around 10pm, arriving YVR at around 3pm; leaving YVR around 9pm and arrive NAN around 6am +2days.

Ahh the mystery of Fiji Airways deepens. I agree it sounds promising. This line seems weird though:

The Manager Ground Operations -YVR will own and maintain all local relationships at all USA airports where Fiji Airways operates.

Is that hinting that it will be a tag-on to a US destination? Why would YVR's ground ops manager "own and maintain local relationships at all US airport where Fiji Airways operates"? Can someone explain if they know?

As for AC, it might be small but it's positive news they are bumpbing up transborder to mainline. AC Express has a place, but some of YVR's CRA routes were too long for my liking (ie. ORD and even SAN). I know they are terribly long, but I think of Express as going to Seattle or Portland, not Illiniois. So that means they will have mainline service to ANC, AUS, BOS, ORD, DEN, HNL, OGG, LAS, LAX, EWR, SAN, SFO, SNA. Jazz service to DEN, PHX, PDX, SAC, SAN, and SEA. And 2/6 of those also have mainline. So only 4 strictly Jazz routes. Pretty small comparatively, which is a sign AC is seeing healthy demand on its US routes from YVR. From YYC, AC will only operate mainline service to LAX once daily and EWR once daily. And then Jazz service to SFO once daily. So 3 flights.. Unreal to see how WS has wiped out AC in the YYC market. Some people blame YVR for monopolizing AC's service out westr, but really it is WS that's the culprit, not another airport.

That is indeed interesting. It could also be a simple case of copy and paste from a previous USA posting, and the hiring manager/intern forgetting to update the details to be Canada focused as it may be their first posting in Canada.

While we await Fiji Airways announcement, YVR welcomed its newest carrier today.

Sun Country launched twice weekly YVR-MSP flights today

Looks like AC is now deciding to use AC23/24 for the KIX flight instead of AC17/18. Currently KIX are scheduled with both flight numbers, but one of them will be removed soon. Maybe AC is thinking about TPE again...?

Flew Icelandair yesterday and was surprised that they had switched the regular 757 for a 737 Max for the flight. I think this was only a temporary operational change and the return flight will be on a 757, but I didn't know a 737 Max can do a 7.5-hour flight. It's a long time on a small plane.

I remember AC had YUL-BOD and YYZ-MAN with 7M8 planned at one point. Both are not much shorter than YVR-KEF.

But then they can also run the BNE/AKL routes with just 3 planes with the plane sitting at YVR on Monday unused.
As predicted, AC is using the slot to rotate with BNE and AKL on days 1357.
